Opening doors and removing ceilings leads to solutions to issues that affect Native Americans today and improves the lives of the next generation of Native people. As we approach Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Peoples (MMIW/P) Awareness Day on May 5, I reflect on what I have done to make a difference. In 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing Indigenous women and girls, but only 116 of those cases were recorded in NameUs, the federal missing persons database. The problem is twofold. One is accurate data tracking through a single database, and the other is financial security to increase safety, health, and reporting. I started the Native Women in Technology group to collaborate, educate, and encourage hiring in Native countries. Financial stability increases access to housing, medical care, and mental health support, which increases safety and encourages reporting by medical providers and victims. In data technology, we have a unique opportunity to share relevant data and create a much-needed "source of truth" database. If you have a job or a company where you can contribute to a solution, you can directly impact the lives of Native people and the cause of MMIW/P.
