How to make electrification happen. Today WindEurope and the Electrification Alliance met with European Commissioner Dan Jørgensen to discuss how to accelerate electrification, improve state aid guidelines, and boost grid investments to support Europe’s clean industrial future. 🔹 Electricity Taxes & Charges – The Commissioner reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to cutting non-energy-related taxes on electricity, as outlined in the Clean Industrial Deal. Lowering these costs will be essential to making electrification more competitive. 🔹 State Aid & Industrial Electrification – We stressed the need for carbon contracts for difference and more flexible state aid rules to make renewable energy procurement easier for industries. The current guidelines are too restrictive, especially for thermal storage and off-site renewables. 🔹 Grid Investments – Investing in cross-border grids and interconnectors could save Europe up to €30bn per year. Commissioner Jørgensen said we need to ramp up infrastructure to unlock the full potential of renewables. We stressed the need for an even stronger focus on electrification as the preferred and most efficient path to climate neutrality.

'Wind Works for Europe' – how wind energy helps to re-industrialise Europe Wind energy is at the heart of the Clean Industrial Deal. Wind is powering industry, lowering electricity costs, and strengthening Europe’s #competitiveness. But can the European wind industry deliver on the ambitious expansion plans? 💪 Yes, it can! Europe's wind energy #supplychain is stepping up, with more than €11bn in investments for new and expanded factories. Our new video series #WindWorksForEurope takes you inside this ongoing expansion. We bring you the factories, people, and innovations driving Europe’s wind energy expansion. Each episode uncovers a key component of modern wind turbines - made in Europe, for Europe. See the facilities of tower manufacturer Baltic Towers, offshore wind supplier Smulders and MEYER WERFT, cable manufacturer NKT, gearbox manufacturer Flender, Polish allrounder Grupa Przemysłowa Baltic and hidden champion eno energy GmbH. Here is a video explainer from WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson. And a press release: https://lnkd.in/e-yxBFeq You can find all Wind Works for Europe videos here: https://lnkd.in/g7DjTxSz

⚡ Tackling Grid Access Challenges for Wind Farms in Europe ⚡ Yesterday, alongside the Hellenic Wind Energy Association, WindEurope hosted a workshop in Athens on one of the biggest hurdle for wind power: grid access. Here are my five key takeaways: ✅ A shift away from "first come, first served" in assessing grid connection requests Many countries are realizing that this old principle leads to a dead-end: unviable delays and bottlenecks. To ensure investment certainty, national authorities and system operators need to implement transparent and stable prioritisation criteria. ✅ Optimise the technology mix To ensure an optimal mix of net-zero technologies, countries also need to prioritise projects that help with system integration or maximise the use of grid connections e.g, projects combining wind and solar or renewables with storage or demand. ✅ Smart queue management: a quick win By optimizing grid connection queues, we can unlock capacity in just months, rather than years. This is also a crucial first step in anticipating long-term grid investments. ✅ Curtailment is a growing threat—but passing the risk around isn't the solution In some countries, curtailment is seriously impacting the business case for wind farms. Instead of shifting liability from one stakeholder to another, regulatory and market solutions must be found asap to balance risk while keeping costs fair for consumers. ✅ Electrification of demand is the only way to keep connecting the renewables we need to achieve net-zero To connect more wind farms, we have to boost electricity demand—especially by electrifying industrial processes. The more users we bring on board, the more we lower electricity prices and spread grid investment costs efficiently. Discussions like these are essential and should happen more often—especially on national implementation, where the smallest details can make the biggest difference. #WindEnergy #EnergyTransition #Electrification

As a proud Welshman working in wind energy and living in Brussels, it’s not often I get to combine two of my biggest passions – so this week was a special one! WindEurope had the pleasure of hosting the Welsh First Minister, Eluned Morgan, for an industry roundtable on how Wales can accelerate its renewable energy ambitions. And the timing couldn’t have been better. This week, the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government passed its budget, including an extra £3.5 million for Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales to speed up planning and permitting for renewables. Since taking office, the First Minister has already approved ten new renewable projects, and she’s set an ambitious challenge: Wales should be the fastest part of the UK in issuing permits. With a target to meet 100% of Wales’ electricity demand with renewables by 2035, the message is clear – Wales is serious about delivering clean energy, boosting jobs, and strengthening energy security. There is a huge opportunity for onshore wind, offshore wind, and floating wind to play a key role in achieving this. But to make it happen, we need a stable, long-term regulatory environment with clear auction timelines to give investors, developers and the supply chain the certainty they need. Great to see my home nation continuing to tackle the challenges. Now, let’s get those turbines turning! #Renewables #WindEnergy #Wales #Permitting #EnergyTransition

The Union of Skills has launched yesterday at the #EUSocialForum. This marks a crucial step to address Europe’s skills gap and strengthen its industrial competitiveness. Commission's EVP Roxana Minzatu was clear - a competitive clean economy needs a skilled workforce. 📢 Key priorities for Europe’s future workforce: - Stronger focus on STEM education to prepare for future jobs. - Make vocational training more attractive. - Upskill and reskill to keep up with industry evolution. - Enhance labour mobility to strengthen the single market. - Attract and retain talent to drive economic growth. At the #EUSocialForum leaders from politics and industry— Sanna Marin, Mario Nava, Ryan Roslansky—agreed: competitiveness and strong social rights go hand in hand. Without skilled workers Europe cannot remain competitive. 💡WindEurope will continue to connect academia, education institutions, and industry for cross-sectoral collaboration—ensuring workers are reskilled, upskilled, and new talent enters the pipeline. We need to generate real interest in jobs in renewables because without people, we cannot meet our climate targets. The measures are in place—now it's time to act.

Steel is 70% of a wind turbine’s mass and 15% of its value. The wind industry buys 2 million tonnes of steel a year—and this will be 4 million tonnes by 2030. As wind becomes Europe’s leading source of electricity, we want to help the steel sector electrify and stay competitive. Today At the EU Strategic Dialogue on Steel with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson outlined 4 key actions to support this transition: ✔️ Earmark industrial decarbonisation funding for steel to ensure they get their fair share in the auctions. ✔️ Scrap the 75% “on-site electricity generation” rule in the State Aid Guidelines so that steelmakers can source wind via PPAs. ✔️ Push Member States to use CCfDs to bridge the green steel cost gap. ✔️ Prioritise green steel in public procurement and future wind farm auctions when the market is ready. 🌬️ Europe’s wind industry will start installing the first turbines with green steel in 2026 – in two offshore wind farms in Denmark and Germany. We want to do more. We want to buy more green steel. And crucially we want to provide much more clean power to the steel industry to help them electrify and remain competitive.
