Brewers Choice Awards 2024 Young Brewer of the Year supported by Totally Natural Solutions Ltd There are some incredibly-talented young brewers working in the brewing industry in the UK and Ireland. Some young brewers are running their own operations, others are cutting their teeth working at established outfits. Regardless, these brewers are making their mark on the industry and are certain to have a long, successful career in the field. Young is, also, a subjective term. You are only as old as you feel, of course. But for the purpose of this category, a young brewer is anyone under the age of 33. If you’re submitting an entry on behalf of yourself, tell us about your responsibilities and successes in last 18 months. Here you can also nominate someone that has gained you respect. Maybe it’s a recipe that’s been developed, or the impact made on the company’s operations. Equally, it might involve improvements to quality and consistency thanks to the work carried out in the lab. This post last week really resonated with me so I’m reposting. Thank you @welshdistillers.com The pub ecosystem has traditionally relied on an entrepreneurial mindset of collaboration to stimulate interest and grow volumes for small producers. Some pub companies and especially freehouses do this really well. But increasingly this is failing to happen and the smaller and you could argue more interesting brewers are losing out big time. Couple with that the glide path on volume declines and you do wonder who is holding the pen on this? I speak to lots of brewers who simply want to understand how to start and conversation with a large pub co and let’s be honest it’s really difficult! Small batch brewers depend on big volume pub companies and multiples to show benevolence and allow a guest ale to support a share space on the bar. It requires someone to be interested on the retail side to bring the beer through. Couple this with remote and challenging distribution, costly energy bills and infrastructure investment and you can see any small batch brewing is not for the faint hearted. So if you believe in beer you need to support it wholeheartedly - and beyond just the financial imperatives. It would take some real commitment in a declining market to revitalise the conversation and improve the relevance of real ale for a new beer drinking community and it’s really important that those beer explorers can access more variety and serves on the bar in every pub they visit. Whilst we are all busy creating pubs without alcohol (important and relevant) I’m interested to see us apply the same effort to one with more beer in it. Just a thought 🙏 it takes commitment, investment and a degree of skill to sell great ale. Let’s not see the craft of beer and local breweries is not lost. Predictions on this? 🍻 Anchor Brewing's intellectual property (recipes, ⚓ brand) and physical assets ( 🏭 brewery, taphouse building) are up for auction as part of a bankruptcy. Sapporo paid $85 MM to acquire Anchor in 2017, then failed to make enough to cover the debt payments. Anchor brewing is a longtime SF microbrewer, making a signature 'steam beer' (I can attest to the unique taste). Multiple buyers are interested, and sealed bids are being sent. The winning bidder will be announced at the end of January. Meanwhile, I'm an an M&A class right now, so I'm seeing all sorts of aspects I was blind to before. 🔮 So prediction questions for y'all: - Who are some likely bidders? - Will the brand+recipes be sold separately from the building? - What will the purchase price be? - What strengths (if any) does 'being from SF' grant a bidder? - Will the local VC from the Chronicle article be the winner?
