This paper gives important insight into Rio's advances in decarb, in an area that is considered 'hard to abate'. With Boron already transitioned to renewable diesel, and Kennecott expected to do so by mid-year, Rio will be consuming around 200m litres of the green fuel on an annual basis. And this is just the beginning of our exciting journey towards sustainability.
Our latest briefing paper focuses on a critical challenge - reducing our reliance on diesel fuel. Diesel has been the backbone of our mining operations for over a century, but it also accounts for 12% of our total emissions. The challenge? There's a current gap in commercially viable, zero-emissions alternatives for large-scale mining. And we're not alone – the entire industry faces this hurdle. That's why we're actively involved in R&D to accelerate long-term solutions. But we're also taking action now. Our strategic pathway combines ongoing innovation with existing technologies to achieve a 50% reduction in diesel emissions by 2030, and net zero by 2050.
