How do you support neurodiverse staff in your workplace? As it’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week I've been reflecting on how, within the team I manage at Tameside Council, we acknowledge and appreciate the unique strengths and abilities of each individual. When a colleague reveals they are neurodivergent, it's crucial to approach the conversation with openness and honesty. We start by understanding their skill set, preferred communication style, and support needs for peak performance each day. I'll admit, I wasn’t initially sure how best to support them when I hired my first neurodiverse team member. But it's okay to acknowledge uncertainties and be open to learning. Supporting neurodiversity isn't about getting it right the first time; it's about ongoing dialogue and adaptation. Through collaborating with neurodiverse colleagues, I've gained invaluable insights. Our team culture now values diverse approaches to work. Personally, I've reconsidered how I engage with all team members, applying adjustments where needed. Providing support shouldn't feel like a burden—it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive. At Tameside Council, we're fortunate to have ample support and resources. As we observe #RTXInclusionWeek, I’m reminded of the diverse backgrounds that enrich our workplace and the unique challenges faced by many of us. Navigating professional responsibilities can be incredibly difficult for those who are affected by global events that impact their families and communities. Hearing distressing news about areas where our loved ones live can make it challenging to focus on our work commitments. During this time, it's important to acknowledge the silent struggles of our colleagues who may be directly impacted. A simple check-in can make a meaningful difference. We may not be aware of the personal challenges others face, and fostering an environment of empathy and support can benefit us all. As we carry out our work, let’s remember the human stories behind the news and be mindful of the emotional weight that some may carry. Our shared humanity should guide our interactions and remind us of the value of compassion in the workplace. Together, we can cultivate a more supportive environment, recognizing that our professional lives are often connected to personal experiences.

This is so important, and it is not a joke. When I first started working with associations to eliminate harassment at their meetings, I gave a presentation to a group of women in association leadership. Based on previous conversations with association leaders (mostly White men) I thought I'd be trying hard to convince them that harassment was a problem and they needed to do something about it. Instead, the first question I got was "How do I avoid unwanted hugs?" She went on to explain that she was CEO of an association that was very male-dominated and it seemed everyone at the meeting, all 4.000 of them, wanted to hug her. So I tossed the slides and the script I'd prepared, and taught them things I'd learned from my Aikido training and from the Empowerment Self-Defense classes I'd taken (thanks, Defend Yourself!). I went on to develop a workshop based on that question, about how to set and hold boundaries in work and professional situations.
