Hong Kong plans to use clean hydrogen in transportation and power applications under a new strategy that aims to bridge the gap between Beijing and the rest of the world. The island administration plans to create a supportive environment for hydrogen energy by improving laws, setting standards and aligning with the global hydrogen market, all while seemingly deepening its reliance on China. A former British colony, Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997 under a “one country, two systems” agreement; seeing Hong Kong hold a degree of autonomy from China. However, over the years, local and global concerns have grown about Beijing eroding Hong Kong’s autonomy, leading to large-scale protests in 2014 and 2019. In 2020, China imposed a national security law in Hong Kong, which critics said further undermined the island’s autonomy. The new hydrogen strategy claims that one country, two systems will give Hong Kong access to mainland China’s “huge” market, positioning it as “the bridge linking the mainland to the rest of the world.” https://lnkd.in/eNJpXBFw

🇨🇦 🇩🇪 "Canada and Germany bolster hydrogen alliance with first-of-its-kind bilateral program" Building on the commitment to implement a transatlantic hydrogen corridor, the governments of Canada and Germany have signed a memorandum of understanding to speed up commercial-scale hydrogen trade between the two countries in a first-of-its-kind bilateral program. The MoU, signed on March 18 by Jonathan Wilkinson, Canadian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and Robert Habeck, German Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, seeks to establish the bilateral program to support hydrogen trade and secure early access for clean hydrogen producers in the German market. Furthermore, the agreement aims to bolster the two countries’ efforts to fight climate change and enhance energy security. Under the MoU, Canada and Germany will..... 👉 Article: https://lnkd.in/d-fpZFSK 🎯 TA RawMaterials: https://lnkd.in/d_Np2KpZ (co-funded by Krixos & the EU) #hydrogen #germany #canada #renewables #hydrogenenergy #evs #eu #cleanhydrogen #climatechange #energysecurity #hydrogenfuelcell #greenammonia #greenenergy

Back in the mid aughts, while doing research for our first book #TheCleanTechRevolution, Clint Wilder and I traveled to #China. We had identified China as one of our 6 C's (major drivers) moving the clean-tech sector forward (the others were Costs, Capital, Competition, Consumers, and Climate). Not to get into the weeds, but China’s 10th and 11th Five Year Plans (2000-2005, 2006-2010) were the first to include goals for renewable energy development. Fast forward to today, and China now leads in the #manufacturing and #deployment of such key industries as #electrolyzers, #solar, #wind, #electricvehicles, and #energystorage. The following article in today's The New York Times highlights just how far cost reduction and mass deployment of #cleantechnologies has come in China and the issues it's having on global policies and plans. Worth the read. #JanetYellen Clean Edge https://lnkd.in/dhfTwxaX

Climate Change Realist - Communicating the scale of the problem, the latest scientific research, breakthrough climate solutions, the sources of climate denial and political support for climate destroying fossil fuels.
I already knew China was building out massive amounts of wind, solar and battery storage capacity, but the pumped hydro story in China is really interesting. (see latest episode of Just Have a Think linked below) Hundreds of Gigawatt hours are being built. You can scoff and spout that we can't believe anything coming out of China, but that's like saying, "that wildfire will never burn my neighbourhood," as the flames are visible from your backyard. Ask residents of Fort Mac, California and Australia how well that plays out. Yes, China has a nasty propaganda machine that probably rivals Big Oil's, but there's no denying that they're embarrassing the rest of the world with their relentless strategy to build a next gen energy system. While we let fossil fuel companies capture our politicians, poison our media and brainwash our children, the Chinese are getting it done and making us look like morons. They're also developing the technologies that we're desperately going to need as the planet gets hot enough for everyone to realize we're in deep sh!t. The Chinese economy will be the greatest success story of the 21st century - I guess it already is, but it will be even more dominating in the future. Holy crap! Does that mean a communist dictatorship will end up being the best political system? I wouldn't count us out yet... we'll soon realize that Big Oil has been manipulating us to greedily protect their own interests. Growth in electrification and clean energy will loosen fossil fuel's hold on the hearts and minds of conservative parties in democratic countries - and lawyers will bring a halt to their climate denial and delay shenanigans. We'll eventually start to catch up with China. But that's no way to win a race. #china #electrification #pumpedhydro #wind #solar https://lnkd.in/gkg9m_Nw

China and Europe should expand cooperation in new energy and green industries, according to participants at a forum in Beijing. Despite rising protectionism and global uncertainties, the two regions should continue to promote bilateral relations and pragmatic cooperation in various fields. European companies are ahead in technologies such as wind power, hydrogen power, and carbon capture, while China has made great strides in green and low-carbon development. Collaboration in the green sector will not only drive technological innovation but also uphold economic multilateralism and free trade. #AsiaRisk #ShiftingGeopoliticalAlliances #China Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gjgEC7pb
