If every agency wins AdAge's A-list local/regional/national/international Agency of the Year gold, silver or bronze award every year, then NO agency actually wins AdAge's A-list local/regional/national/international Agency of the Year gold/silver/bronze award every year. (Especially when it's mostly based on getting creative with the numbers, not how creative the work actually is. Heck, I should start submitting my CPA for this award, he's WAY more creative than I am when it comes to adding and removing 0s.) The fact is, the only agency that should easily win this award every year by creative default is still independent and it still shows Wieden + Kennedy. #Adage not #AdAge

Author, Storyteller, Marketing and Communications Consultant, Public Speaking & Storytelling Coach, Motivational Speaker, Columnist, Teacher
The most delightful thing that a storyteller can offer an audience in any context is surprise. Surprise is a gift to an audience. It's what an audience craves most. This is why the endings of films like "The Sixth Sense" and "Fight Club" and "The Usual Suspect" are so unforgettable. They are so damn surprising. Surprise is unforgettable. It's indelible. Surprise also produces enormous emotion in audiences. Surprise is why we laugh and cry and leap out of our seats while watching a movie. It's why we weep at the end of a novel or cry out in joy after receiving great news. You cry when the doctor says "It's a girl!" because, if you were smart, you were surprised. Surprise produces emotion. Watch the Johnnie Walker ad below and try not to become emotional. What produces that emotion? Surprise. Therefore, storytellers must be careful not to telegraph surprises to their audiences by injecting their present-day perspective into their past. This week, I heard a storyteller say, "I thought I had finally found a safe place to lay my head." But the words "I thought" signaled that the storyteller was wrong. It wasn't a safe place to lay his head, but the storyteller didn't know he was wrong at that moment, so the audience shouldn't have known it, either. Audiences want to experience stories in the same way the storyteller experienced the story, beat by beat. This is why sentences like: "Little did I know that..." "I would soon find out that..." "If I had only known at that moment.." ... are terrible sentences for stories. And life. They ruin the possibility of surprise and telegraph subsequent events and their results to the audience. That stinks for an audience member, so it stinks for a storyteller, too. So don't do it. Beat by beat. Now ominous hints at the future. They don't exist in real life, so don't stick them in your stories. Learn more at storyworthymd.com

Embrace excellence ⭐ We've all heard the adage, "The reward for good work is more work." While true, this perspective is limited. Good work often yields diverse benefits beyond just additional tasks. I recall going above and beyond on an extra assignment from my manager, expecting nothing in return. Surprisingly, I received monetary compensation upon completion. However, the rewards for exceptional work aren't always financial. They can manifest as: ☑ Valuable knowledge and experience gained ☑ Increased trust from superiors ☑ Potential for promotion recommendations ☑ Sometimes, seemingly unnoticed efforts (which may pay off later) Regardless of immediate outcomes, maintain your commitment to quality work. What's your take on this? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
