Reflecting on Paris 2024: A Lesson in Preparedness for Nigerian Sports Authorities Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic cyclist, Ese Ukpeseraye, recently reflected on a challenging yet unforgettable experience at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Ukpeseraye, originally registered for the women's road race, found herself unexpectedly competing in two track events at the last minute. These events required specialized bikes that she did not have. Thanks to the generosity and sportsmanship of the German team, who provided her with the necessary equipment, she was able to compete. Her story has since sparked debate among Nigerians, with many questioning the competency of their national sports authorities. Nigeria's Sports Minister, John Owan Enoh, addressed the situation, explaining that the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) had offered Nigeria last-minute slots in the track events following another country's disqualification. He emphasized that the specialised bikes needed for these events take months to order and deliver, making it impossible to have them ready on such short notice. “Ese Ukpeseraye’s debut as Nigeria’s first Olympic cyclist was marked by resilience and an unforgettable act of sportsmanship. Competing on a German team-provided bike in the Paris 2024 Olympics highlighted gaps in our national sports infrastructure. As we move forward, the key question is: how can we ensure better preparedness for our athletes in future competitions?” #Paris2024 #Sportsmanship #NigerianSports #OlympicsReflection

This first post Paris Olympics week is still carrying the buzz of excitement and inspiration! What was it about this Olympics that had many of us at hello?! Paris’ historic beauty is undeniable. In collaboration with the greatest sporting event on this planet, it was the first Olympics with full gender parity and delivered across 32 sports many magnificent moments, heartbreaking defeats, moving stories of the athlete’s pilgrimage to get there, fun entertainment (Snoop Dogg did not disappoint!), excellent “play by play” coverage and unity. For all of the upheaval in various parts of the world, the ability of the global sports communities to come together in respect and support, even in the throes of intense competition, was a master class in how to do it. -Lift one another up and celebrate the achievements -Learn from the experiences -Recognize the generations of Olympic athletes who came before and paved the way to be better, along with the competitors who pushed the level of performances to the highest and best in the moment -Appreciate all of it and the village of people who were an integral part of the journey While there were issues; some that could be quickly addressed and resolved, some that required an alternate plan and others that are still smarting from a questionable decision, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games captured our heart's and broke many records. #ParisOlympics #WaytogoUSA #lovewhatyoudo #teamwork #healthandwellbeing #LA2028

- 16,000km - 9,941 miles - 352 days It took for Russ to run the length of Africa from the most southern tip in South Africa to the most Northern point in Tunisia. What a feat, but it got me thinking (after conversations with Zarina Bahdur & Anjali Saini ) of what is needed for elite athletes to perform continuously at the highest level? We all know sports performance is important, but how much importance is placed on it? Would love to know some innovative ideas, products and technology being used to gain the extra advantage for athletes? #sportsbiz #sportperformance #elitesports https://lnkd.in/e5gyZhjz

"Punching above our weight" - Pardon the pun following Kelly Harrington's boxing Gold medal, but that should be #Ireland's official motto, because it's true. What an achievement for a small country of just 5m people to not only win 4 gold medals so far at the Olympics, but also to have the highest productivity, the highest standards of education, of food production, and the nicest people in the world. I am inspired by this country's (and my team's) human resources and resourcefulness, and this ability to do it with a smile. In many ways, the Herdwatch journey would not have been the same anywhere else, or maybe even possible, because our business motto could also be "Punching above our weight" - We have always tried to do the right thing with limited resources, for farmers and ranchers, for our amazing team, for our communities, and we have built a fast-growing international business, a beacon of Irish #Agtech supported by fantastic Irish structures such as FRS Co-Op, Local Enterprise Offices in #Tipperary, AgTech Ireland, Renatus and of course Enterprise Ireland who have stood by us for many years in our international journey. Finally, none of this would have happened without Ireland's membership of the European Union - for all its failings (and it has many), the EU has brought people closer and given me and millions of others opportunities that did not exist just 30 or 40 years ago. (For those who don't know, I came to Ireland on an EU-funded ERASMUS student programme for a year, and never went back...and wasn't thrown out!) If it wasn't clear already, I am extremely grateful to have been "adopted" by the people of Ireland and #Roscrea. I will always be a proud French man, and love both nations (I have dual nationality), but Ireland has given me so much, including my wonderful wife Antoinette and daughter Amélie, and I will continue to do my best to give back. Maith thú agus go raibh maith agat Éire 🙏👏💚🇮🇪 PS: Ireland is officially 12th on the Olympics medals table (which is amazing) but actually 3rd on the "Gold medals per capita" table!! I think that table should be used officially alongside the other one - China are pretty much last on that one and the USA are 29th! "Olympics Glory in Proportion" as the website says 👇

219/366 SPIRITS OF THE OLYMPIC There are three values why the Olympics are quadrennial events for every country on the earth. "The three values of olympism are excellence, respect and friendship. They constitute the foundation on which the olympic movement builds its activities to promote sport, culture and education with a view to building a better world." -International Olympic Committee- The Olympics are not just an event. It is more than that. The pressure, the challenge, and the process to be the best among the best. The athletes put everything in the sports to be the best. Sweat, tears and blood all become one. They put aside their family, friends and hobby. Just to focus, they sacrifice everything. Just to exceed our expectations. The Olympics are more than just an event. Fair play, Respect and Tolerate is compulsory for all the participants that take part in this event. Ignore the Is Not Real, Gold is just a bonus. The important part of the Olympics is to maintain the respect between each athlete and remain in a good relationship with the people around. #NadzmiJourney

Did You Know? Fun facts about the Olympics in Paris As the Olympics unfold in Paris, here's an interesting fact: South Africa has a delegation of 142 athletes participating in the games. In comparison, the combined strength of the Nordic countries amounts to 426 athletes. Even Iceland, with its small population, is represented by a commendable group of 5 athletes. South Africa is showing remarkable potential, especially in swimming. Their track and field team are also a strong contender, set to compete against our Nordic athletes in these arenas. SA has already secured their first gold medal in the women's 100m breaststroke. As for the Nordic countries, the question remains: which nation will be the first to clinch a gold medal? At Nordic House, we are excited to follow the progress of these games in Paris. We extend our best wishes to all the athletes from South Africa and the Nordic countries. May the spirit of competition and excellence shine through for everyone involved. #Olympics2024 #Paris2024 #NordicHouseCapeTown #OlympicSpirit #NordicHouseCapeTown #CapeTownNetwork #NordicHub #Nordic #NetworkingHub #BusinessHub #scandinaviannetwork #scandinavianhub #sørafrika #SuðurAfríka #EteläAfrikka #Sydafrika #Kapstaden #Kapkaupunki #Höfðaborg

Is a bobsleigh track worth more than 500 trees? The Italian authorities, against the opinion of the IOC, have decided to realise a new bobsleigh track for the 2026 Olympics. All this despite the fact that the track made for the 2006 Olympics in Turin was available. They chose to cut down 500 trees, dispunify a natural area forever and squander 81 million euros. The alternative was the 2006 track recovery (2006, not 1936). Obviously I am not opposed regardless of great works and big events but this is a totally irresponsible choice. This is not only an Italian issue but concerns everyone because this is not how an Olympiad is organised What do you think? Do you agree with me or are you wrong? #environment #sustainability #olympicgames #milanocortina For more: 📌 Follow #ImpressiveEngineering 📌 Click on the 🔔
