As SLP's we are not trained in curriculum-based instruction and SPED programs curriculum are light years behind general education. Let's dive into how and why Joybound was created. Katherine Cohen, MS, CCC-SLP, of Joybound Publications has her bachelor's in severe-profound and low-incidence disabilities. She was a special educator before getting her masters as an SLP and is now pursuing her PhD in curriculum and instruction. "Despite 90% of all of us SLPs working in a school setting at some point in our career, there's no coursework in our graduate program for pedagogy, evidence-based teaching principles, how to plan instruction over a large period of time that is required in Gen-Ed." #SLP #SpecialEducation #Curriculum #Joybound #SpeechTherapy #Education

A boarding school is an educational institution that provides both academic instruction and accommodation for its students, typically during the school term. Unlike day schools where students return home at the end of the school day, boarding schools offer a residential environment where students live on campus, often in dormitories or houses supervised by residential staff. Boarding schools vary widely in terms of size, curriculum, philosophy, and extracurricular offerings. They may cater to students from elementary school through high school and even post-secondary education. The primary distinction of a boarding school lies in its holistic approach to education, combining academic rigor with character development and personal growth. In addition to classroom learning, boarding schools provide a structured environment for students to engage in various activities outside of academics. These may include sports, arts, music, drama, clubs, community service, and leadership opportunities. The goal is to foster well-rounded individuals who excel not only academically but also socially, emotionally, and physically. Living away from home can be a significant adjustment for students, and boarding schools typically offer comprehensive support systems to help them navigate this transition. This may include counseling services, peer support networks, and residential staff who provide guidance and supervision. Overall, boarding schools offer a unique educational experience characterized by a sense of community, camaraderie, and personal responsibility. Students form lasting friendships, develop independence, and acquire essential life skills in preparation for college and beyond. #talentserve #task13 #boardingschool 🏫

Children learn best through play. It develops their social and emotional, physical and cognitive skills. In fact, it develops all their skills. You can’t miss this step and skip straight to putting a pencil in their hand. Climbing, running, jumping and throwing develop your gross motor muscles. Squeezing, pinching, pulling and threading builds fine motor strength. All help with hand eye co ordination. Only then are you ready to hold a pencil. Even then, you need to have been surrounded by a literacy rich environment so you have the vocabulary to say it before you can write it. I lose track of the times I’ve tried to explain this to senior education leaders who wonder why we are “just playing” and when we will start the “proper learning”.

Give me strength !! Play is children's work, supported and facilitated by professional Early Years practitioners. If we removed the high stakes external assessment points in Primary schools, staff could and would open up a play based curriculum. https://lnkd.in/gZvMEfkH

What to do when students demand a teaching style that the evidence doesn't support? If your students want a particular style of learning that the pedagogy simply doesn't support, what's your next move? We explore this in my chat with Laura Mason - there's an assumption that students arrive to uni with their best learning style already figured out. That might have worked for them at school-level education, but how to you help them transition into being fully-fledged university students? Check out the full episode here - https://lnkd.in/eTPYH5RY #highereducation #pedagogy #digitallearning #highered

Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities and Modern Literature - Video game stories / VR for English education / English and Creative Industries / Social media
This is a suggestive post on experiential learning and active pedagogy. But how far does or can this apply in a subject like English? Outside of drama, higher-level English has not usually been centred around learning through embodied experience, in real or simulated environments, and with other people. Rather, the primary 'experience' is what happens when the student encounters, imagines, and closely reads flat text, and then discusses that in the classroom or essays. As I'm trying to imagine the possibilities of VR in English education, I'd be really interested to hear challenges to my assumptions above, or to discover where others have found opportunities for experiential learning in the English HE classroom.
