It's coming to the end of my term as Mayor of Elmbridge. One of the most unexpected appointments of my life - it's been brilliant meeting so many extraordinary people and businesses and I wouldn't have missed it for anything. To top it all off, this coming Saturday, I'm jumping out of an aircraft at 10,000 ft. to raise funds for a remarkable local charity https://lnkd.in/e2tE724K which does amazing work for struggling families. I'll be accompanied by two high fliers from the Hilton Cobham and my son in law Benjamin Bobroff. Oasis has opened my eyes... Families can become fragile so easily. A job lost, poor self esteem, solace in alcohol and drugs, poor parenting skills, neurodiversity, illness in the family, violence. Modern day life is so complex and it’s easy to slip between the cracks. According to Relate: “Broken and unhealthy relationships can lead to debt, loneliness, health problems, depression, homelessness, criminality and can have a profound effect on children’s life chances. Nationally 1 in 4 women are victims of domestic abuse, but in Surrey we have one of the highest rates in the country with 1 in 3 women being subjected to domestic violence and hundreds of children witnessing and being impacted by living in family homes where domestic violence is present. Catastrophic family breakdown knows no boundaries. Race, class, wealth - it’s everywhere, but perhaps in Surrey, it’s just better hidden. So. who picks up the pieces? That’s where Oasis comes in. They work with the people who have no voice - the woman who finally decides that the beatings have to stop, the man who can’t take the ridicule anymore and the children who don’t get heard at all. Oasis helps put people back together. It helps them find lives that are worth living and a place where their children can recover and even thrive. So, if jumping out of an aircraft helps, then I'm up for it (literally). If you fancy donating a few ££ here's the page: https://lnkd.in/eaE2vV2Q

Executive Director at OMI Cultural Participation Project • Social Media Content Creator • Social Media Manager • Graphic Designer
OMI Cultural Participation Project is committed to artistic & cultural excellence in San Francisco District 11, and providing resources to those in need. With the high cost of living pushing many vulnerable individuals & families to the brink and onto the streets, we recognize the need for safe & secure housing, and basic necessities to help stabilize our community. As homelessness continues to rise citywide in San Francisco, and especially in our community, our goal is to create a network foundation of support and compassion with our community partners, providing hope and a new start for those who have fallen on hard times. Together we can create a ripple effect of compassion and generosity that reaches far beyond what we can imagine. By joining forces and rallying support for this cause, we're not just offering temporary relief; we're planting seeds of hope and empowerment. Every donation, no matter how big or small, has the power to transform someone's life. It's often easy to underestimate the impact of a simple act of kindness, but for someone in need, it can mean the world. Your support could provide shelter, nutrition/ meals, or essential resources that can help someone rebuild their life and regain stability. Let's come together and be the beacon of hope that lights the way for those in need.

We're urging all Skipton Building Society eligible members to vote for Age UK as their new charity partner. 1 in 7 older households live in ‘non-decent’ housing, 2.1 million older people live below the poverty line and, right now, older homelessness is rising. Your vote could give us the opportunity to deliver a new project, A Place to Call Home, which will support 5,500 older people living in deprived communities to live well and independently in safe, secure and warm homes. Skipton Building Society members, please vote for Age UK and show older people they’ve not been forgotten 👉 https://bit.ly/3x71sKg

Like last week, I had to record right after meeting with my business coach because I had another revelation about how New Coyote's growth path will go. It is a given that the bare minimum to work with us is a commitment to equity, but I’m starting to realize that more than that. I need a commitment to impact. It’s all well and good to have principles that mimic centering marginalized people, but when you have a real chance to change not only the reality of your population, but the ways that they’re being harmed overall, do you get brave and give up on the status quo in order to lean into liberation and create real change for the people you serve? Or do you push out the radicals who are creating this change in order to turn a blind eye to the reality that we could be living in? Dr. Nicole Truesdell talks about bringing competence to incompetent spaces. This phenomenon occurs where people who do not know how to serve our populations hire us for our marginalized identity and our lived experience, and then fire us when it turns out we actually do this work better than they do. People in power are frequently unwilling to skill up or learn new strategies because that would imply that the current strategies they are using are not good enough - which we already know is true, based on the continuing reality for marginalized people in this world. To combat this phenomenon and create something that l strongly feel will significantly impact this industry and this region, I decided to convene an (invite-only) braintrust of people who I’ve personally worked with, who I know for a fact have been pushed out of incompetent spaces for their higher level of competence. I don’t know yet know what it's going to be or the impact we will have, but I’m certain that it’s gonna be amazing.
In this week's video, NCC CEO Marina Martinez-Bateman (they/them) discusses the problem of hopelessness in the nonprofit sphere, why it exists, and how they're seeking to address it with their new nonprofit braintrust: "There are a lot of people for whom the idea of all the homeless shelters closing and all the food banks closing because we have everyone housed and fed - that is terrifying for them. They have to live in a world where there will always be a constant number of starving, houseless, underrepresented, harmed, imprisoned, enslaved people that they tend to but never dismantle the thing that is creating that suffering. For some of us who have been harmed... hope is a really painful emotion. The idea that it doesn't have to be this way is a really painful emotion, because then we have to accept that it didn’t have to be that way for us. " https://lnkd.in/g-GNbX79

As you celebrate Independence Day, remember that we have a long way to go to achieve and protect the independence and freedom for the citizens in our country. For victims and survivors of domestic violence, independence often feels intangible. For them, independence means many things, such as owning their own bank account, housing, accessible transportation, buying groceries, and much, much more. CAWC does everything we can to make all of these milestones possible for our clients and families working to rid their lives of abuse. Through counseling, life skills classes, in-kind donations, and more, we are an essential support system to help adults and families rebuild their lives. To learn more about CAWC and what we do, visit www.cawc.org. #IndependenceDay #FourthOfJuly #Independence #EndDomesticViolence

Ahead of Matthew's run to every Premier League stadium we wanted to highlight why he, you, and local businesses, are coming together for Mission 135. Mission 135's goal is to raise £405,000 across Club 135, Network 135, and Team 135. Of course, the money is incredibly important in maintaining our suicide prevention and bereavement support services, but it's more than just a fundraising campaign. It's about people. It's about the 135. On average, every death by suicide affects 135 people. That equates to more than 760,000 people last year in the UK alone. We believe the best way to support the 135 is by preventing the 1 from taking their life. That's our goal. That's our mission. So thank you for every mile, every cake baked, and every profit shared. Together we can, and will, save lives, support communities, and prevent suicide. Join our mission: https://lnkd.in/eTS8UHqr #Mission135 #SuicidePrevention #SuicideAwareness
