Karen Hsi, ACI, CICA NEXTGen committee member and University of California (UC) executive director of captive programs, is working to implement an internship for UC students to get exposure to the captive industry and build the next generation of captive professionals. UC students would be able to study abroad at the University of California Washington D.C. Center (UCDC) campus and intern at the District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB). When was the last time you self-advocated? Yes I'm talking to you .. stop scrolling for one second 😉. Here's vintage Em ... I was 19 and doing my internship with Lloyds Banking Group (and feelin' super fancy at a rooftop bar in Bank for post-work drinks 👀 ). During that internship I experienced the importance of self-advocation at a very early stage in my career. Whilst at Bristol I had attended an event on in-house law, on the panel was a man who worked at Lloyds. I was in the office one day and saw the same man who had been on that panel. Here's when I took action. I could have very easily let it go but I've always been the kind of person that wants to continue to learn and develop even if that means that I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I sent him a message where I told him I was looking for a professional mentor and we arranged a coffee meeting. 6 years have now passed and we still meet every month for a catch up. If I hadn't taken a chance on myself I would have missed out on an incredible mentoring experience that has literally spanned a huge chunk of my early adult life. Stop being afraid to take a chance on yourself .. the worst that could have happened to me would have been either a one-time meet or not receiving a response (nothing earth shattering). I would love to know how you have self-advocated because I really don't think we're taught these skills often enough. #selfadvocacy #personaldevelopment #growth

Today I completed The Council Acadamy's Introduction to Insurance Course. This is a 6-week course offered by The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers that was provided to me through my internship program at TrueNorth Companies, L.C. The Introduction to Insurance Course covers a high-level overview of many insurance topics. Some of my favorites to learn about have been roles within a brokerage, captives and emerging trends in the industry. I am eager to apply what I have learned to my work and personal life. These are topics that pave way to a diverse variety of career paths and areas within the finance and insurance field.

⚖️ Allen & Overy Solicitor Apprenticeship Recruiter Q&A ⚖️ Yesterday afternoon I has the pleasure of attending a Q&A session with recruiters from Allen and Overy. This highly insightful session began with a snapshot of who A&O are. This included information such as the vast number of offices A&O have across the world and their interest in legal technology. This was very interesting, as while I had been aware that Allen and Overy are a highly significant firm, to see the statistics regarding this really solidified my interest in applying to A&O in the future, whether that is as an apprentice or a trainee. We were also informed about the extensive benefits of working at Allen and Overy, including the ability to get beauty treatments and exercise on site, and also the signing on bonus for apprentices, something very useful for applicants who live outside of London. After this, the solicitor apprenticeship application process was explained to us and we were directed to a list of very useful resources to use when applying. This included commercial awareness resources, such as Legal Cheek and Financial Times, and also Allen and Overy's own resources, such as their podcast. This was very helpful, and I will certainly look into these further to improve my own commercial awareness. Finally, after a quick walk through of different opportunities offered by A&O, we had the opportunity to ask the recruiters any questions we might have. Overall, this event was very insightful and an amazing opportunity to get clarification on areas I was uncertain about. why don't brokers(trading ones to be specific) offer internships though? If some of the revenue streams are IB(Introducing Broker) they mostly bring clients , empower them instead of building short term relationships because now your name(brokers) get dragged in the mud . they are busy on IG(Instagram) disclosing the NDAS and fighting for clients #trading #brokers #investor #financialmarkets #forex #sa #africa
