A cornucopia of colorful fruits and red, orange, yellow and brown leaves is what I think of as we enter September. It’s also a month of mixed emotion as we remember the lives lost and affected on Patriot Day. Last year this time, we kicked off planning our first podcast delving into mental health in conjunction with September being National Suicide Awareness Month (our family has experienced the impact of feeling hopeless). September also represents renewal, reflection, and the need to prepare for change. True to our company values, it’s not just about making a difference and changing certain narratives; it’s about being the difference and the change through our five Es… Energy Flag football is on deck and we’ll work to improve our teamwork quotient along with building mental and physical acumen. Education, Empowerment and Entrepreneurship. We’ll welcome our fall season Morehouse interns and Georgia State University Panthers Accelerated Career Experience (PACE) program participants. Each team will be exposed to business and Entrepreneurship. Our second annual Push4Change is focused on exposing high schoolers to STEAM-related internships as an alternative to violence, in partnership with several vendors like The Edge Foundation (Blacks in Microsoft), Georgia Tech/Earsketch, Federal Aviation Association/Hartsfield Jackson, and many others (Education and Empowerment). Engagement We’ll embrace Hispanic Heritage by celebrating with our teams and giving thanks for their contributions. And…we’ll celebrate the fruits of the team’s labor on Labor Day while staying focused on the balance of the year and finishing strong with Best Burger 🍔 execution. …our work is never done. You ever had one of those moments where you're surprised you actually had a smart thought? 😅 We just launched our Chegg Summer Internship Program this week, and I was chatting with one of our interns about how I started my career in public education and nonprofits. They asked whether I felt like I was able to make an impact grinding it out in those early years. I said I did - but I also said that I don't believe the desire to make an impact is enough to sustain you in that kind of work. When we talk about burnout in mission-driven organizations, particularly in social justice, there is often this sense of "we're here for the mission". It's undoubtedly true, the folks drawn to this work care deeply about making the communities we live in better and more fair. But when it becomes the only thing that's true, the only reason you're working there, the core identity that keeps you there, it's not going to sustain you. The reality is that we'll never be able to make the full impact we want - no matter how successful our work is. That's because the challenges that face us are so much bigger than any one of us can handle. This isn't the same as being cynical or giving up - it's about recognizing justice work is a relay race, not a marathon, and we all have to pass the baton forward. When I look back on my pre-corporate years, I don't see that time as having been lost (even if I did come out of it missing a few doctors visits and retirement contributions). Nah - I learned so much in those years about myself, my instincts, how to build systems oriented around equity, all things I value now. So my advice for young professionals looking into impact work - yes, do it for the mission, but also do it for yourself. Think about what you want to learn, what you can learn from these places, and why that matters to yourself in the long-run. You deserve to grow, not just to serve, and when we value our growth, we can build healthier relationships to our work. Lowkey I'm very surprised I had all this in the back of my mind 😅

Thank you to all of the employers and government organizations hosting summer interns, program participants, and mentees. We know that you are serving as a mentor, role model, nurturer, parental figure in some cases, career counselor, and most importantly, a listener. As you support our youth and young adults this summer, know that they may reach out to you for support throughout the year. In some instances, you may be their only support within reach. Whether you believe it or not, what you represent and who you are (even when you are still developing) is more of a witness to greatness than you think. Know that you are a model of success, a model of courage, and a model of encouragement to those learning in the summer employment programming spaces. Keep walking with your head high and be unapologetically committed to supporting each of them. They deserve our best and to know when even we have to reset. Allow them to see the real side of work, how culture strengthens relationships, and how leaders grow when they support every part of the organization. Let them see you.

Since 2020 my love for the summer time has grown. Why? Because 2020 was the first summer I was able to host summer interns in New York at my business Vision Street Research LLC. Our internship program is one of the ways we deliver on our commitment to #WorkforceDevelopment.  Last week, A new summer intern Vision Street Research , Cle-Andre' Stewart, had the pleasure of speaking with Jonathan Prevost, MPA Senior Associate at The Pew Charitable Trusts. Throughout his discussion with Cle-Andre', Mr. Prevost spoke about several ways to promote self growth, especially on a professional level. Key advice included: 1) Always have an open ear and build relationships with those that may be more successful than you at that moment to be able to learn more about what it took for them to get to their career path. 2) Network no matter where you may be, emphasizing that you may never know who will become an important factor to your success in the future. 3) Mr. Prevost stated that as an athlete, Cle-Andre' needs to understand the importance of leveraging the competitive nature within the workplace. Thank you, Jonathan, for your time and effort in deeply educating Cle-Andre' pertaining to personal growth in and out of the workplace! #VisionStreetResearch #VSRSummerLearning#JonathanPrevost #ThePewCharitableTrusts#Growth

Meet Murphy Alum, Quinnyata Bellows from the North Shore Country Day School Class of 2015. During her time at DMSF, Quinnyata participated in Affinity Groups and held a Walgreens Corporate Internship. Today, she works as a freelance producer and costume manager. Let’s hear what advice she has to share! 💙What was DMSF’s impact on you? 💛I learned that staying connected with my community and creating connections that last a life time can benefit me more than any fleeting moments. The people I have met through Daniel Murphy have influenced me in a number of ways. So many doors have opened for me that I never thought I would have access to because of volunteers and staff that have reached out to me during and after my scholarship program. It would be an understatement to say that I have gained a number of mentors that have paved a way for someone like me to flourish in the arts and make a career out of something that was just my passion and curiosity at the time. 💙Why was receiving a good education so important to you? 💛The older I get the more impactful my education history has been for me. With every decision I make, the skills and ability to navigate through society were just basic lessons taught to me through programming and courses dedicated to ensuring my success in the past. I may not have fully understood the weight of an amazing education in my teenage years but seeing how things could have been more troubling for me now makes me all the more grateful for the opportunities I had. This ever changing appreciation for my education is what makes it so important. 💙What advice do you have for current Murphy Scholars? 💛Take advantage of everything. This seems like a simple task but I think at a young age it’s easy to look past the small details but every thing that comes your way is a potential door that can opened and explored.
