Ever wondered about "capacity for care" in animal shelters? It's all about an organization's ability to house and care for pets properly with the resources available. Animal shelters can prioritize capacity for care by: 🐶 Reuniting lost pets with their families 😸 Helping families with resources needed to keep their pets 🐶 Placing pets in foster homes 😸 Ensuring quick and positive outcomes for pets But even shelters with the most consistent positive outcome programming can find themselves over capacity. Given the challenges of overcrowding and limited resources in many shelters, having a solid "At Capacity Action Plan" is essential. Check out our strategies for managing capacity challenges — download the free checklist: https://lnkd.in/gPrpv6a6 Interested in interested in learning more about the world of animal services? Capacity for care? Shelter Animals Count explains this sometimes-misunderstood concept. When more animals enter shelters than leave, animal shelters can quickly exceed their capacity. When this happens, they have four options: increase live outcomes, house more animals in foster homes, euthanize for space, or allow animals to live in overcrowded and often substandard conditions. Capacity for care is the idea that shelters should know the approximate number of animals they can house while maintaining safe, humane conditions. Yet for many animal shelters, just how to calculate and use capacity for care is a bit of a mystery. To get advice, we checked in with Drs. Kate Hurley and Cindy Karsten to learn more about how shelters can understand and operate within their capacity for care.

Shelter professionals: Submit your questions for our panelists to answer live in our ASPCA Shelter Behavior Roundtable: Changing How We Talk About Behavior Dogs and Cats. March 28. How we talk about the pets in our care matters. Whether counseling an adopter about the sassy cat they are interested in or talking with staff about the reactive behavior they observed in a new dog, the words we use will affect the pathway for that animal. Join our panel of experts as they dig into the issue of how we talk and think about some of our more challenging shelter animals. Panelists will share examples and tools with attendees that can be implemented quickly into daily operations. #shelterbehavior #animalwelfare #animalwellbeing #dogbehavior #dogtraining #catbehavior #feline #animalshelter

One of my advocacies is animal welfare. As a person with deep empathy, it hurts me when I see others hurt- whether they are humans or animals. In my speaking engagements, I often share insights around finding your purpose, both as individuals and as organizations. As for me- one of the reasons I work as hard as I do is because I support animal shelters, and it breaks my heart when I see dogs or cats up for execution. And that's the reason why I need to share this: For those of us who have homes in Davao, you might want to help save a furbaby's life.🐶 Each of these loving animals deserve a home, and none of them deserve to be executed for not having one. Look for Project Zero K on Facebook, or copy and paste this link: https://lnkd.in/gZ3kc9XS Here's hoping the power and reach of social media can help save lives. May you be blessed and a blessing. . . . #superwithcooper #purpose #advocacy

For #PhilanthropyFriday we’re checking out Michigan Animal Rescue League 🐾 The Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) is one of southeast Michigan’s most established animal shelters, serving the community since 1953. Their history and experience combined with constant evaluation of trends in animal welfare and sheltering have made them a necessary and respected asset within the community. As, “A Different Breed of Shelter” they challenge the stereotypes of traditional animal shelters and believe that the, “Quality of the Wait,” can make all the difference in the future of an animal!❤️ The Mission of the Michigan Animal Rescue League is to provide the highest quality of life to dogs and cats through rescue, medical care, socialization and behavioral support, short- and long-term sanctuary, adoption, and community education and outreach. Adjusting to the shelter environment can be hard for dogs and cats. While MARL’s staff and volunteers make every effort to make their temporary home welcoming, the shelter is still often a place where dogs and cats find themselves confined in an unfamiliar environment, separated from their previous families, and exposed to much more noise than they’re used to. This is where MARL’a enrichment program comes in! Enrichment is a term that describes how shelter environments can be adjusted and enhanced to better benefit each animal. The goal of enrichment is to minimize stress levels by adding different kinds of stimulation and activities to each animal’s daily routine. 🌈 RIP 🌈 Sharing my story gives me a higher survival rate. Pledges will help attract a rescue. Rescues cannot intake animals without fosters. A1919852 Located At: BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description: My name is Blair. I am a female, black and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 5 years old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since Jan 25, 2024. I am in kennel DADOPT14. https://lnkd.in/gJF7zxkK SHELTER NOTES 02/09/24 13:15 Curled up on her bed when I approached but stood and walked up to door with tail low but wagging, ears down and licking snout. I entered kennel and reached hand to her and she winced, then once I held hand still for her to sniff she began wagging tail again and stepped closer to be pet . While petting she stood still with tail down, but when I would stop she would begin fast wagging tail and get onto my lap. Treat motivated, but did not appear to know any verbal commands while getting a new picture, would follow my hand holding treats with eyes. Please contact BARC if you can help!
