Shelter professionals: Submit your questions for our panelists to answer live in our ASPCA Shelter Behavior Roundtable: Changing How We Talk About Behavior Dogs and Cats. March 28. How we talk about the pets in our care matters. Whether counseling an adopter about the sassy cat they are interested in or talking with staff about the reactive behavior they observed in a new dog, the words we use will affect the pathway for that animal. Join our panel of experts as they dig into the issue of how we talk and think about some of our more challenging shelter animals. Panelists will share examples and tools with attendees that can be implemented quickly into daily operations. #shelterbehavior #animalwelfare #animalwellbeing #dogbehavior #dogtraining #catbehavior #feline #animalshelter

How we communicate about the animals under our care holds significant weight, especially now, as shelters and rescues across the country are grappling with their fourth consecutive year of outcomes not keeping up with intakes. Whether it's guiding a potential adopter through the personality quirks of a spirited cat or discussing the behaviors of a recently arrived dog, the language we choose shapes the journey for each individual animal. Join ASPCApro for a webinar Thursday, digging into the issue of how we talk and think about challenging shelter animals. Panelists will share examples and tools with attendees that can be implemented quickly into daily operations!

Ever wondered about "capacity for care" in animal shelters? It's all about an organization's ability to house and care for pets properly with the resources available. Animal shelters can prioritize capacity for care by: 🐶 Reuniting lost pets with their families 😸 Helping families with resources needed to keep their pets 🐶 Placing pets in foster homes 😸 Ensuring quick and positive outcomes for pets But even shelters with the most consistent positive outcome programming can find themselves over capacity. Given the challenges of overcrowding and limited resources in many shelters, having a solid "At Capacity Action Plan" is essential. Failing to spay and neuter dogs and cats has led to an increase in mistreated and abandoned pets, as well as additional pressure on overcrowded shelters. World Spay Day doesn’t necessarily celebrate animal sterilisation, but instead educates pet owners how it can save millions of animals' lives and reduce the number of unwanted pets living rough. Dogs and Best Friends Animal Society supporters and staff filled the Hall of Governors Tuesday to celebrate Gov. Spencer Cox declaring 2024 as no-kill shelter year in Utah. “Whereas, achieving no-kill for all of Utah’s animal shelters is within reach, and would make Utah the largest no-kill state and the first no-kill state in the West,” Cox wrote, “Now, therefore, I, Spencer J. Cox, governor of the state of Utah, do hereby declare 2024 as no-kill shelter year in Utah.” The declaration encourages animal shelters to change policies to save pets’ lives. A no-kill state means that the shelters within the state save the lives of pets they house. According to data from Best Friends, 47 out of 60 shelters across the state are no-kill. So far, 45,538 furry friends have been saved. The total save rate is 87.8%, while 1,700 cats and dogs have been killed. This data was formulated from shelters’ most recent data (in years 2021, 2022 or 2023). Read more: bit.ly/4bXuWKo ✏️: Hanna Seariac, Deseret News 📸: Jeffrey D.
