As the quick commerce space gets heated up, multiple contenders are aiming for the fastest convenience delivery, it is worth exploring how they are faring in terms of the product assortment they are bringing to the table. To do the same, one needs to look at the business concentration in terms of category depth and category breadth. 💠 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐡 - This is defined as the number of sub-categories and products one particular category holds. This can be a good indicator to see the focussed category for the business and the one they want to be a preferred destination. For example, 𝐆𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐭 & 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 and 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 seem to be a focus area for Big Basket (See the image below) 💠 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐭𝐡 - This is defined by the number of categories live on the platform, which essentially is a good indicator to assess the variability in the platform's catalog. A balanced one provides the customer with a choice beyond the focussed category and is a good way to cross-sell and increase the average order value. For example, Big Basket has around 11 categories mainly focussing on the grocery and daily essentials which depicts a balanced category distribution. Digital price stickers are coming to a store near you. 👉🏽 Walmart and other retailers are replacing traditional price stickers with electronic shelf labels, allowing for rapid and frequent price changes. 👉🏽 The labels facilitate price adjustments and offer benefits such as increased productivity, reduced walking time for employees, and quicker shelf restocking. 👉🏽 Retailers are drawn to electronic shelf labels to ensure consistency between online and in-store pricing, helping to avoid customer frustration and confusion. 👉🏽 The use of surge pricing, similar to Uber's model, is feasible with electronic shelf labels, but experts believe that companies like Walmart are unlikely to take advantage of this feature to avoid risking customer satisfaction. 👉🏽 The digitized shelf labels also provide additional product information when scanned, such as product sourcing and dietary information, enhancing the shopping experience for customers.
