#EDUGATE Have had the honor of hosting the first #Arab_ranking_of_universities (ARU)celebration during #EDUGATE 14th Conference.   the Arab Ranking of Universities Council has released its first-ever edition, the 2023 Arab Ranking for Universities, which evaluates 115 universities in 16 countries. The ranking council emanates from League of Arab States - General Secretariat, the Arab League of Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO - الألكسو), (FASRC Arab Scientific Research Councils) and and the Association of Arab Universities. #Saudi_Arabia’s King Saud University took first place in the classification, whose results were announced on December 21. #Egypt, with 28 ranked universities, was country most represented on the list, followed by Iraq, with 19, Jordan, with 18, and Yemen, with 10. Palestine and Libya each had eight institutions on the list, while Saudi Arabia had seven, Tunisia had four, and Syria three. In addition, three countries—Lebanon, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates—had two universities each, and Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait and Somalia had one each. The new ranking evaluates institutions based on four key indicators: education and learning; scientific research; creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation; international and local cooperation and community service. 🎉 Super happy to share that the final paper of my dissertation got published! 🔎 Through the perspective of university offshore campus managers, the paper investigates the strategies of Dubai's government to position the city as an “international education hub”. The paper uncovers some of the contradictions in this strategy, and shows how the aim to become a so-called international education hub can be understood as an evolution of global city strategies under the economic imaginary of the knowledge-based economy beyond the Global North. 📄 You can access the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e439tJ6F

Friends and colleagues... we are so excited to be hosting the Arab Summit in Amman this December, alongside our brilliant partners at University of Jordan and Al Ahliyya Amman University. The event will focus on issues pertinent to the region - specifically: 💥 RESEARCH 💥 How can universities implement frameworks that support research capacity and output? The vital role of funding, industry partnerships and the need for research to be applicable to regional challenges will be addressed, with a focus on agriculture, health and tech. 💥 EMPLOYABILITY 💥 Can higher education bridge the gap between graduates' skills and industry requirements, to enhance employability among the youth population? New technologies that enhance teaching and learning provisions will be examined, as well as the need for cross-sector collaboration to develop the future workforce. 💥 EQUITY 💥 What are the responsibilities of universities as drivers of sustainable community development? We will focus on how institutions can ensure that higher education in the region remains accessible and equitable, with a specific focus on supporting refugee access. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 ranked over 16,300 academic programmes. While global data offers a unique snapshot of the higher education sector, there is also significant value in taking a more regional view. Dr Ashwin Fernandes, QS Executive Director for Africa, Middle East & South Asia, has reviewed the data, and reflected on what it means for the Arab region’s universities. Results in brief: - Saudi Arabia continues to dominate the region, boasting 13 subjects ranked in the world top 50. - Jordan is the Arab region's most improved country. - Oman's Sultan Qaboos University improved in 50% of its subject rankings. According to Dr Fernandes, "While world university rankings continue to showcase the strengths of western universities, it’s clear that regional players are now stepping up. It was moving to open the American University of Sharjah #Alumni Reunion Dinner one year after taking over the presidency from His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, who founded #AUS and led it so expertly for 25 years. Addressing the event, I expressed the inspirational power of the #diverse university #community, with its #talent, #vibrancy, #potential, and its #commitment to build a better future for others, especially the underprivileged. We have a clear and ambitious roadmap to bring AUS to the pinnacle of higher #education in the world, through the pioneering #research and #innovations that enhance our reputation and influence. These efforts are already paying off in prestigious international recognition and #scientific breakthroughs.
