One of our favorite charts! Based on a survey of a couple dozen NASA programs, you can clearly see the exponential increase in cost overrun when programs/projects are starved for front-end system engineering resources. This chart is a testament to the systems engineering discipline and a reminder that up-front project/program investments save tax payer money and deliver better results. NOTE: TDRSS (one of the notorious over-runners) was the U.S. Tracking and Data Relay Satellite used by NASA for space communications, including for the space shuttle program.

Following the April publication of my piece “Taking Aristotle to the Moon and Beyond,” the quarterly journal Issues in Science and technology, a joint publication of the US National Academy of Sciences and Arizona State University, is hosting a panel discussion on June 6, 2:30 Eastern Time, to discuss how philosophy can help NASA consider humanity’s future in space and develop its vision for exploring the cosmos. Watch and let me know what you think I got right and where I missed the mark. https://lnkd.in/eSytm6NP

As an academic I fought for years to change the perception around the idea of citizen science as "just outreach and science communication". Important discoveries are made by people without or "wrong" degrees. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration vindicates this by highlighting key citizen science contributors, as one should. #citizenscience #astronomy #citsci #scicomm #sciencecommunication https://lnkd.in/eg6WsQhV

Today’s ~research~ forecast is cloudy with a chance of showers of new info about the formation of rain droplets! ☔️ ☁️ A recent study found that turbulent movements of air in clouds is key to rain formation, specifically the growth of droplets and the initiation of rain. The team used advanced computer modeling techniques and observations from a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration field campaign to track turbulence and how it affected rain droplet formation.
