Today marks one year since I was appointed CEO of Vinyl Group (ASX: VNL), and what a transformative year it has been. In the past 12 months, we’ve relaunched as Vinyl Group, moved offices, built Vinyl.com from scratch, and successfully completed the acquisitions of both Vampr and The Brag Media. These milestones required countless air miles and hours on the phone, pushing the limits of what I thought possible. Following each acquisition, we underwent significant restructures to showcase and elevate the incredible talent within each company while aligning our cultures. My commitment to ensuring the success of every acquisition has been unequivocal. I’ve learned that while M&A is challenging, the true test begins with post-M&A integration. I’m immensely proud of our team and the work we've done, even though it has left me feeling the burn of this intense journey. As I reflect, it’s clear we must carefully assess the timeline for future large transactions. Thankfully, our current M&A strategy involves vertically aligned targets, minimising the need for further horizontal expansion into our already comprehensive ecosystem and budding empire. This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions – laughter, tears, broken bones (figuratively and literally), a promotion to the board, and CEO presentations at multiple shareholder meetings. I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with hundreds of our investors, both in person and virtually. We’ve proudly upheld our mission as Australia’s only ASX-listed music company, and we will continue to do so with unwavering dedication. The journey hasn't always been easy. I've experienced first hand the various challenges of raising money both publicly and privately, and it’s a grind that never gets easier. Yet, within this year, we've raised $19M in new funds, increased our market cap from about $20M to nearly $100M, and climbed the ranks of ASX microcaps. There is still much to be done, but these achievements would not have been possible without the incredible support of my team, partners, investors, board and the wider community. Great Insights from the CEOs of Crossbeam & Reveal who have decided to "become co-founders" of the combined organization a few years after starting their respective companies one year apart. Mergers are always fascinating, but this one is special. Two thought leaders on partnerships walking their talk within their own private ecosystem, and making big chunks public. Interesting to hear the genesis, from their GTM in their respective markets, to constantly "meeting" (competing) on deals, to a first face-to-face at the Partnership Leaders conference (another reason to be in Chicago this August 14th), and the importance of the first meeting to build trust. Their wisdom from previous entrepreneurship journeys - Bob spoke about his realization that beyond superficial differences (belonging to different orgs), competitors share loads, so much so he spoke of "kindred spirits" - contributed to the friendly first steps in what became a Merger. Both building innovative solutions for ELG, Crossbeam started addressing the data problem, Reveal started tackling GTM inefficiencies. The new organization will benefit from Reveal's excellence in experience, built on top of the strong Crossbeam platform. Looking forward to see how far and high they'll go.
