“Planning should be chiefly a design process, not a legal one. Design-based, community-scaled solutions are paramount because we now must grow within our existing places rather than sprawl, which has ruined too much land, generated too many greenhouse gas emissions and wasted too much time as we drive for every simple thing. The city and all its neighborhoods must get better with more people in them. We need to design physical cities to be more enriching and distinguished. The degree to which a city becomes more equitable and resilient has to do with its physical attributes. How the physical city changes determines the degree to which we can deal with housing affordability, mobility and climate adaptation. Making places that are resilient and economically, socially and environmentally sustainable requires a different relationship with the land.”

#Walkability of any neighbourhood is one of the key measures of how well it will support people’s lives. This is because #walkability is not just about walking - walkable neighbourhoods are often more cycle friendly, as well as accessible for people with prams or mobility aids. Walkable neighbourhoods often ‘feel’ better to move around, and encourage street life, and the result is stronger #placeattachment and #socialconnection. Our walkability isochrone maps provide a fascinating lens to examine the walkability of any local area. Both to understand ‘how walkable’ a place is, but also revealing what lies within the walking catchment and shedding light on the quality of amenities. We are currently reviewing all our major cities and suburbs with the release of our annual State of Australian Neighbourhoods Report in early 2024. Would you like to live in a brand new city? There are plans to build many new cities in countries around the world. Rather than focus on making an existing city smarter, these new cities will be designed to eliminate the need for most driving, and even try things like communal land ownership via a trust. A new city can also be designed with a mix of housing that improves affordability and blends different types of housing together. This avoids the "missing middle" in many cities today, where too much zoning for single-family homes contributes to unaffordability.
