See the great link below from our friends at the Shared-Use Mobility Center of a blog by StreetsBlog USA: "If you want to improve your community, start by listening to the people who live there. A new survey in Bogotá analyzed real people's opinions on essential amenities and barriers to sustainable mobility. How can one build a “15-minute city” when residents say pedestrian infrastructure is poor and they fear street violence?" Question: Do we as planners really listen enough? Are we designing for us and our peers or for the community in question? Some food for thought. See: https://lnkd.in/g5CT7dj7

Have you heard about the 15-minute city? This relatively new urban planning model aims to provide residents with all essentials, including medical services, educational institutions, places of business, and social interaction spots, all within a 15-minute radius. 🚶♀️🚴♂️ But it's not just about proximity. The 15-minute city fosters a culture of community, echoing the town square model of living prevalent before the Industrial Revolution. It encourages engagement and interaction, giving residents a sense of ownership and attachment to their community. 🏘 According to a recent survey, around 78% of US participants would be willing to pay more to live in a walkable community. The concept also promotes healthier and stronger communities, boosts the local economy, and reduces urban pollution. As the writer states, "While the 15-minute city model is neither perfect nor claims to be, it is one option to consider as we seek to expand and recreate our cities. It may not be feasible in its entirety in your area, but perhaps some elements of the model can be incorporated into your existing infrastructure." Check out the article by Celeste Benitez Galicia written for the ICMA - International City/County Management Association's PM Magazine to learn more about the potential benefits and impact of the 15-minute city. 👇 #urbanplanning #Community #15MinuteCity #SustainableLiving #Walkability #CityLife

"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭" 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚'𝐬 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 The most pronounced dynamic shaping U.S. cities heading into 2024 is "the donut effect" — a hollowing of the urban core as people, jobs and retailers flee to the suburbs and exurbs. Why it matters: For all the talk of 2023 being the year of downtown recovery, the reality looks more like a swirl of experiments in how to attract residents, commuters and visitors to cities where the pulse beats differently than it did pre-pandemic. American suburbs - the precursors of the 15 minute cities?! Initially the US suburbs were built just outside of the big cities, with all the necessary amenities accessible within short distance. Along the years these suburbs have spread further and further away and became ‘ bedroom communities’. This is an interesting perspective of how the US can fine tune the initial community planning that went into building the first suburbs and reduce the carbon emissions, the car - reliant long commutes and eventually improve citizens’s quality of life and build communities. #15minutecity #suburbs #americansuburbs #usa #carbonemissions #commute #buildingcommunities #esg #sustainability https://lnkd.in/gnHQgnhu

It’s exciting to see our work catching on. The car built America but in many ways it has come back to bite us. The 15 minute city concept trades car-centric for #convenience and connection. The #community is back! Residents want communities that are #walkable, where they can achieve their daily needs in a readily accessible fashion. Achieving activity goals becomes an easy, natural outcome. These communities are more #affordable because they leverage smart density. They are more #accessible because they’re designed for people, not cars. Four #Pillars of 15-Minute Cities In a TED talk viewed 1.5 million times, Moreno describes the four pillars of his approach. He elaborated on them to me in an email exchange: #Ecology : “It is a green and sustainable city: more green places and more vegetation in public spaces, promoting sustainable lifestyle and mobility.” #Proximity: “People can reach their everyday needs in decarbonized short distances by walking or biking.” #Solidarity: “A city that creates links between people, that enables exchanges and breaks with the individualism of big cities.” #Citizen participation: “Enables the active engagement of people in their neighborhood transformation.” https://lnkd.in/eXf6SNuK
