Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting State Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Karl-Josef Laumann at our Bilfinger Region DACH site in Herne. 🤝 His visit, part of a state-wide skilled worker tour, highlighted our commitment to #diversity in the workforce. 🌟 We're proud to be recognized as a #bestpractice example for attracting female skilled workers through training opportunities in traditionally male-dominated fields like #scaffolding and #ropeaccess. 👷🏻♀️ A big thank you to Minister Laumann for his visit and to our team for their dedication to fostering an inclusive work environment. 🙏 📸 (c) Thomas Schmidt, Stadt Herne

Labour Day, celebrated in Poland on May 1st, holds deep significance for #society and the #economy. It is a time when people commemorate and appreciate the importance of work and workers' rights. There are several reasons why this holiday is so important. 👇 Firstly, #LabourDay commemorates the struggle of workers for better working conditions and fair wages. It reminds us of the hardships endured by workers during long and exhausting days of labor and the need to protect their rights and dignity. 🛡️ Secondly, Labour Day is an opportunity to manifest solidarity and unity among workers. It is a time when various occupational groups, trade unions, and labor organizations can celebrate their achievements together and collectively strive for improving working conditions for all. ✅ Thirdly, Labour Day reminds us of the importance of social equality and justice. It is a time when we pay attention to the issue of social inequality and advocate for the fair treatment of all workers, regardless of their background or social status. 🤝 Lastly, Labour Day is a time for rest and reflection on the significance of work in our lives. It is a time when we can appreciate the toils and achievements of our labor and spend time with family and loved ones. 👪 In conclusion, Labour Day is an important moment to honor and appreciate the contributions of workers to the growth and development of society. International Labour Day 2024 holds special significance as we also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Union Syndicale Fédérale (USF). For this special occasion, we would like to reaffirm that we stand united, not just today, but every day for social justice and decent work for all. It also serves as a poignant reminder that many of the social advancements we enjoy today are the result of a balanced distribution of power that we’ve been fighting for since the day our trade union was born. May 1st symbolises unity and cooperation, underscoring the importance of standing together rather than succumbing to division, which undermines our collective efforts. Let us not forget that negotiation, advocacy and, when necessary, general strikes are vital tools in securing fair and democratic workplaces. We are still facing adversity and complex challenges that need our determination to foster social harmony and set in motion the social equality that we dream of. The International Labour Day is a good reminder for us not to lose our vision of what we have been and what we are still fighting for. Therefore, for International Labour Day 2024, we wish all workers to have the right to participate in the decision-making processes, to ensure they have their right to have a better working condition in a socially equal working environment wherever they are, whatever work they do. Happy Labour Day ! #MayDay #LabourDay2024 #UnionSyndicale #50yrsUSF #JoinTheUnion #JoinUS

Dear Colleagues, As we gather here on this International Labour Day, we are reminded of the profound importance of social justice and decent work for all. In a world constantly evolving, where the challenges of climate change loom large, our commitment to ensuring safety and health at work becomes ever more crucial. Today, we stand united in our pursuit of a future where every individual has access to dignified employment, where their rights are respected, and where their well-being is prioritized. Social justice demands that we address the inequalities that persist in our societies, ensuring that no one is left behind. Decent work goes beyond mere employment; it encompasses fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for growth and advancement. It is the foundation upon which thriving communities are built, where individuals can contribute meaningfully to society while fulfilling their aspirations. Yet, as we confront the realities of a changing climate, we must recognize the unique challenges it poses to labor rights and workplace safety. From extreme weather events to the impacts on industries and livelihoods, the effects of climate change are far-reaching. It is incumbent upon us to adapt and innovate, to ensure that our workplaces remain safe and resilient in the face of these challenges. On this Labour Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to social justice and decent work for all. Let us strive for a future where every worker can go to work knowing that their well-being is protected, where their contributions are valued, and where their rights are upheld. Together, we can build a more just and sustainable world for future generations.

Yesterday, our colleague Karin Iseman spoke at the 12th Annual United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights in Geneva, together with the human rights activist Junya Yimprasert. The session focused on the gaps in temporary labour migration programmes, with Enact paying special attention to the rights of Thai berry pickers in Sweden and in Finland. Berry pickers face many challenges as the industry is prone to breaching basic human rights. Poor working and living conditions, long working hours and exhaustion are common issues for Thai berry pickers coming to the Nordics. Most of the berry pickers are recruited through recruitment companies which offer little transparency and that require heavy fees. Many end up in debt and without little to no profit after spending the summer months picking berries. All while, labour unions remain quiet. It is crucial that the whole industry ensures there are processes in place for human rights due diligence, as well as for the labour unions to do more to protect the workers' rights. The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter has written a story on the event and can be read here: https://lnkd.in/djriGdAZ We would like to thank the Working Group on Business and Human Rights and Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for co-hosting the session and we look forward to working further on ensuring the rights of all migrant workers. If you are interested in learning more, or collaborating on the issue, do not hesitate to reach out to: Karin Iseman at karin.iseman@enact.fi or Ulla Roiha at ulla.roiha@enact.se

A very happy International Workers' Day 2024 from Maithri Aquatech, India 🙏. This momentous occasion is celebrated each year on 1st May under the aegis of International Labour Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, devoted to promoting social justice and internationally recognized human and labor rights, pursuing its founding mission that social justice is essential to universal and lasting peace. The ILO brings together governments, employers and workers representatives of 187 Member States, driving the following broad objectives: 1. Set and promote standards and fundamental principles and rights at work 2. Create greater opportunities for women, men, other genders to decent employment and income 3. Enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all 4. Strengthen tripartism and social dialogue The theme of this year's #Mayday is : "Ensuring Safety & Health at work in a Changing Climate" Climate change creates a ‘cocktail’ of serious health hazards for 70 per cent of the world’s workers The health consequences of climate change can include cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, kidney dysfunction and mental health conditions. Occupational safety and health considerations must be become part of our climate change responses – both policies and actions. Working in safe and healthy environments is recognized as one of the ILO’s fundamental principles and rights at work. We must deliver on that commitment in relation to climate change, just as in every other aspect of work. United Nations post on X is indisputable 'Labor Rights are Human Rights' and it is our individual and collective duty to respect, recognize, celebrate, reward and promote their selfless efforts. The more important issue is of treating them fair and square as fellow human beings deserving the same human rights and privileges that we all do. In a more practical sense each one of us is a worker doing different types of work. It is the only honorable thing to lead life harmoniously without any discrimination, prejudice and bias.
