Advertising is truly a constantly evolving space. Ads come and go but some of them just leave a mark on you. Whether it is the iconic sounds, the music, the actors or even the quirk - you can't ignore them (Unskippable Ads anyone?). Which is why, I wanted to talk about a very specific ad today. Recently, when I was meeting a CMO, she talked about an ad - "Jo biwi se karein pyaar....."(you already know the rest). And that is the power of advertising. I merely gave you the first half of the iconic line and your brain has already completed it. I went back and re-watched that ad and found myself taken aback with the sheer brilliance of it. It was a 1 min ad (IMAGINE - having the freedom of executing an ad for 1 min and having your audience's undivided attention considering there was absolutely no media present at the time to fight for their attention) and it smartly pitched the product to the consumer. The salesman begins by asking the husband "Aap apni biwi se kitna pyaar karte hain? to which the husband is shocked. The ad further goes into clarifying why he asks this question and then introduces the product. They even managed to give you a short safety video within this time stating that the pressure cooker was indeed safe leading to consumers breathing a sigh of relief. The ad seamlessly speaks about the quality of the product, guilt trips the consumer into buying the product and educates them too on the science behind the build. It was truly an all rounder for the time. And I know, the ad is rife with age old tropes where the woman doesn't have a voice, she barely speaks in whispers to her husband. The husband is shown as the bread earner of the family. The salesman only speaks to the male of the family. The most comical of all is that the couple walk into a store that sells pressure cookers and the husband is unsure about what they want. The wife has to step in and say that she wants a pressure cooker because she is the one who runs the kitchen and men are (obviously) ignorant of any kind of kitchen utensil/cookware. An ad like that would never fly today which is why the ads with Aishwarya & Abhishek Bachchan throw away those tropes and showcase the wife in a more confident role leading the ad whereas the husband is portrayed as a slightly irresponsible man still defending his behaviour. It isn't as amazing as the original ad but does its job. Nonetheless, I felt that the older Prestige ad was a brilliant piece of advertising and a lot of us can learn a lot from it. 1. Gauge what the problem area of your customer is 2. Emotionally get them involved 3. Showcase the superiority of your product but make it relevant to them 4. My tip: Don’t be afraid to experiment with your different platforms and see how you can repurpose different content. This can in turn: A.) save you time B.) further create cohesiveness across your brand as a whole

 I saw an ad for 805 Brewing Company that caught my attention. It’s more of a music video than a product commercial, featuring Jade Jackson covering Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” It resonated with me because: 1) I love classic song covers. 2) At Freeform, we did a cover of "This Land Is Your Land" with Milck for the series “Motherland: Fort Salem.” The show reimagined the Salem Witch Trials with witches as the USA's military, examining nationalism, gender roles, and patriotism. Here's the Motherland: Fort Salem version: https://lnkd.in/gBtemmSS Guthrie’s song challenges the idea that some people are more entitled to the land than others, calling for a compassionate and inclusive America. Its dual nature as both a patriotic and protest song made it perfect for a show that questioned duty, honor, and patriotism. 805 Brewing Company's ad is an emotional homage to America, promising that a good beer can bring people together. It’s a lovely sentiment, demonstrating the power of a brand message over a transactional product ad. This ad by 805 Brewing is a gift to the consumer, designed to evoke community and togetherness. For “Motherland: Fort Salem,” we created a rendition that was both eerie and poignant, complemented by imagery of an alternative America grappling with terrorism and political struggles through powerful witches. The power of a song to connect with an audience is immense, especially when reimagined. Both commercials use “This Land Is Your Land” to show that our past still informs our present. Mark Twain said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Guthrie’s song, written during the Depression, resonates today in our divided society. In advertising, sometimes we need to recontextualize emotional stories from the past to create connections. Reframing this song brings people together and highlights the complexity of patriotism and power, making an emotional connection in different ways. At Pith and Pixie Dust, one segment of our business focuses on renovating classic brands and creating cultural relevance for emerging ones. Kudos to 805 for exemplifying Mark Twain’s wisdom in their ad.

The line between good food content and great food content is so thin. I met with a brilliant food brand yesterday to discuss their video content, my favourite topic, (outside of Manchester United, what a save by Onana last night…) and it got me thinking about a series we developed while I was at Twisted called Hangin’ With. In this series Twisted hung out with different music artists to discuss all things hangover food while we rustled up a spin on guests' favourite dishes. Our first guest was Jax Jones (link below), the shoot went well, he was great, the edit looked amazing. We uploaded it and it did fine. Months of planning, brilliant food shoots (on nice cameras) but average performance. Rather than accept defeat we took the video down, analysed it, reworked the opening 8 seconds and re-uploaded it, with no other changes. The video went on to get 1.8m views. The point here is that I don’t really believe there is good or bad footage (within reason), the Tiktokification of things has meant more and more content is shot on phone and still performs, but knowing how to manipulate it is key to getting real value from it.
