#latestactivities Fashion's future: ECONYL Aquafil, headquartered in Italy, spearheads a transformative campaign to revolutionize the conversation around textile waste. The core thrust of their endeavor centers on championing fiber-to-fiber recycling, a pivotal response to the staggering global issue of an annual 12.6 million tons of discarded textiles. Venturing into a recycling facility in Slovenia, discarded fishing nets and carpets undergo a remarkable metamorphosis into ECONYL. This nylon yarn, boasting infinite recyclability, stands as a testament to Aquafil's inventive strategy in addressing challenging recyclables. Through a chemical recycling process, nylon waste is transformed into raw caprolactam, a substance traditionally sourced from crude oil. This groundbreaking approach establishes a sustainable loop, and the versatile ECONYL yarn becomes a key component in diverse products worldwide. Textile Exchange are on a mission to drive a 45% reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions that come from producing fibres and raw materials by 2030. Currently, virgin, fossil-based synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon account for the majority of global fiber production and related GHG emissions. With performance and technical properties that allow them to be used as a replacement for traditional synthetics, biosynthetics can be derived from sources like corn, sugar beet, sugarcane, wheat, and more. Textile Exchange has released a guide on how biosynthetics can be part of the fashion and textile industry's journey towards a regenerative and circular future. 💥 Swag Visionary + Thought Leader 💭🔍 Custom Product Design + Global Sourcing 🌏 Compliance for Corporations who are - Reducing Carbon Emissions 📉 - Creating Less Waste 🌿 - Growing Bottom Line 💰
I wasn’t planning to post today but I am BEYOND excited for this new report from Material Innovation Initiative! 🤓 Polyester is the only fabric that allows for a successful sublimation process. What does this mean for promo? Sublimation is a fast way to print designs that are crisp, can be detailed and in full color, and is typically cost-effective compared to other modes of decoration: —> in the simplest form, think printing a whole soccer jersey (or hat or lanyard) vs embroidering on one (this results in more cost and heavier items!). With potential for clothes/lanyards/backpacks/visors/etc to be made from bio-based synthetic fibers (and be able to be sublimated on) instead of straight up polyester, aka plastic, alternatives beyond rPET (recycled poly) are on the horizon. !!!!!! *insert gif of kermit freaking out* While rPET fabrics can be a great way to divert plastic from landfills and oceans, there are still problems for how to manage the end of the life cycle of the new product made from this material (can the jacket be repaired; will the lanyards be collected at the end of the event?). Nerd out with me and dive in below! 👇
Shedding from synthetic textiles is the number one source of microplastic pollution, so what options do we have for tackling this problem? In this report we dive into the green chemistry that could make synthetic fibers work for us—in bio-based form, including: - Polyester’s properties, including its performance and applications in textiles - Polyester’s myriad environmental and ethical harms - Promising bio-based solutions from PLA to PHA - Innovators developing high performance, exciting, and ethical next-gen alternatives to polyester and much more… #MaterialInnovation #Nextgenmaterials #Sustainability #Innovation #Fashion #Textiles #Polyester

How well do you know your fabrics? ✨ Natural vs. Synthetic Fabrics ✨ Natural Fabrics 🌱Made from plants & animals 🌾🐑 (cotton, wool, silk). 🌱Soft, breathable, and biodegradable ♻️. 🌱Requires lots of water and harvesting can involve unethical practises 💧 fabrics can shrink or wrinkle easily. Synthetic Fabrics 🧶Made from chemicals 🧪 (like polyester & nylon). 🧶Durable, stretchy, and fast-drying 💪. 🧶BUT… releases harmful chemicals during production and microplastics into water when washing 🌊🛑. 70% of garments produced are synthetic fibres, so please remember to wash them with care to reduce microplastic pollution! 🌍 #fashionparadesg #SustainableFashion #NaturalVsSynthetic #EcoFriendlyFashion #ChooseWisely #slowfashion

The use of chemical dyes in the production of demin material (jeans, jackets etc) has long lasting environmental impact. Demin fashion is valued at around 70 billion USD, globally. Now, organically derived dyes from plants are in development to turn the tide around. The other two challenges for making the fashion industry more sustainable, will be in the area of textile fibers, and water use + recycling. While carbon emissions have been getting undivided attention and media focus at a constant pace, the possibility for environmental conservation and pollution mitigation becomes one of the prime fashionable focal point for the industry to create and maintain brands that Gen-Zs can relate to. > https://lnkd.in/gUQGvdQn #money #fashion #sustainability

Let's address the (microfibre-shaped) elephant in the room. Every year, the equivalent to 700 million polyester shirts are released into the ocean from microfibre shedding.🌊 We estimate that a staggering 3 billion more are being caught and lost in unrecoverable sludge. But why should we be thinking about our microfibre emissions? We know that microfibre pollution released from textile manufacturing is typically a mixture of organic and plastic fibres, all of which are damaging for natural ecosystems.🌍 At Matter, we are working with industry brands and manufacturers to conduct our Microfibre Assessment Programme (MAP). During a MAP, our expert team collects data to gain insight into microfibres released in the environment during manufacture, and to determine recommendations for intervention.🧑🔬 Read more about how we are delivering impact through our textiles solutions: https://lnkd.in/d9cJA4ar #fashion #supplychainmanagement #sustainablefashion #textile #microfibres
