GALY announced the closing of an oversubscribed $33 million Series B financing led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) with participation from new investors H&M Group and Inditex. The funds will fuel the expansion of GALY’s research and development on its innovative cellular agriculture platform and its flagship product, “GALY Cotton,” which uses 99% less water and 97% less land than traditional cotton while emitting 77% less CO2, as it advances towards pre-industrial quality and scale. GALY is expanding its cellular agriculture platform beyond cotton to include other plant-cell products, aiming to address a global agricultural market valued at $1.7 trillion annually. "We are thrilled to have investors who recognize the crucial role that our climate adaptation technology will play in our daily lives,” said Luciano Bueno, CEO and Founder of GALY. “GALY’s lab grown cotton is on the verge of a breakthrough and could reduce reliance on virgin cotton if successful. We’ve been supporting the company’s progress since 2019 and are really excited to be part of this latest investment round. About 60% of the materials we source for our products is cotton and we have high ambitions that all our materials come from recycled or other sustainable sources by 2030, so partnering with GALY makes perfect sense,” said Martin Ekenbark, H&M Group, Circular Innovation Lab Lead and Board Observer at GALY. https://lnkd.in/gWeeS-xM #MaterialInnovation #Nextgenmaterials #Sustainability #Funding #Textiles #Innovation

By integrating Circulose into our products, we’re taking significant steps towards a more circular and responsible fashion industry,” said Lisa Diegel, director of global sustainability at Faherty Brand. Circulose senior director of business development and strategy Dr Anna Sammarco added: “It is exciting to be working with Faherty Brand and to boost our shared vision for circular fashion by using Circulose in the collection. Anti-fur protests used to be fairly common occurrences during New York Fashion Week. However, after several major designers and brands pledged to stop selling fur, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) set their sights on getting the fashion industry to give up leather. Stella McCartney will be reviving the “I’d Rather Go Naked” campaign at New York Fashion Week with an “It’s About F*cking Time” we ended the use of leather. Stella, who has never used leather in her collections, will make a major statement in the windows of her SoHo store. Actor Caylee Cowan and other animal lovers will appear Tuesday with strategically placed “No Leather Ever” signs and briefs from Karla Welch’s The Period Company. They and other supporters will then march from the Greene Street boutique to Washington Square Park. The event will double as the launch of McCartney’s winter campaign and PETA’s “No Leather Ever” pledge. https://lnkd.in/e2s8qWA6 #Materialinnovation #Nextgenmaterials #Sustainability #Fashion #Collaborations

While next-gen wool should (by definition) have a lower environmental impact without the animal-cruelty, these factors alone are not sufficient for success. Next-gen wool must also meet the performance attributes of wool and be cost-competitive.
