📣🏳️🌈 Your voice matters! The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth is currently developing the next National LGBTI+ Inclusion Strategy. The strategy aims to promote inclusion, protect rights, and improve the quality of life and wellbeing for all LGBTI+ people. As part of creating the next strategy, the Department wants to gather the views of our community, they want to hear what life is like first-hand. They want to know what is working well, what needs to change or improve if there are any gaps, and what should be prioritised in the strategy. They have created an online survey through which you can share your thoughts and ideas and help shape the strategy and its priorities—the deadline to share your input is Friday 5 July. I'm really excited to be launching the Plus Importance Project, the UK's first registered charity with a focus on the + of LGBT+! People that identify fully or partly in the + (including asexuals, intersex people, pansexuals, non-binary people and many more identities) continually experience erasure which has contributed to a lack of rights, respect and representation. Additionally, public understanding of identities in the + is incredibly low. And the (currently limited) research shows that we're experiencing negative consequences as a result, for example: ➕ Asexual people are most likely to experience a negative response when coming out ➕ Intersex people are most likely to experience physical or sexual attacks ➕ Non-binary people are particularly likely to have felt over the last year that life was not worth living We're changing this by providing training and support to organisations, educating the public and conducting research. With more and more people (particularly young people) identifying in the +, it's particularly important for organisations to improve their understanding and make inclusive changes. We're currently looking for 12 Bristol-based organisations to be involved in our pilot scheme and help refine our offer. Happy LGBTQ+ History Month! 🏳️🌈 In this reflective article, Rosie Hazeldine takes us back to a time before 2003 when Section 28 was still in effect. She reminds us that a significant portion of today's workforce was educated under this legislation. Whether we were aware of it or not, this impacted what we were taught, what attitudes and behaviours were left unchallenged, and how we are doing now, long after Section 28 has been consigned to history. Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 was introduced by Margeret Thatcher’s government. It stated that local authorities, and by extension schools, “should not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish materials to promote homosexuality”. 🚨 New Data Alert! 🚨 According to the latest findings from The Kaiser Family Foundation, a higher percentage of LGBT adults, compared to non-LGBT adults, have faced COVID-era job loss. 📉 56% of LGBT individuals or someone in their household have experienced job loss during the pandemic, in contrast to 44% among non-LGBT individuals. These numbers underscore the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on the LGBT community's economic stability. As authors in this themed issue have consistently pointed out, interventions that grapple with the intersectionally varied structural drivers of 2S/LGBTQ+ health remain lacking and, in particular, warrant urgent consideration. This is especially the case during a time when structural threats to the well-being of 2S/LGBTQ+ populations are on the rise, both in Canada and in other geopolitical contexts.
