My first job was working in Tesco food deli in Islington I was 17 and I wore a bright blue shirt for two years. when my shift was quiet in the deli I’d go on the shop floor and help stack the shelves, but my favourite was working on the checkout because I’d get to speak to the customers I LOVED that job. On more than one occasion customers would enjoy the small talk and say “you don’t belong here” and they’d mean working for Tesco and they’d intend it as a compliment I have always resented the idea that our circumstances mean something about us as people. The idea that you can tell who’s valuable or worthy because of their job title, uni degree, social class, city they live in or how many followers they have It sucks when folks judge your cover and therefore don’t bother to read the book At the same time, I think that we all have to hold ourselves to a higher standing. We have to be the first ones to stop judging ourselves when we fail, to stop beating ourselves up for wherever we are on our journey We have to be the first ones to show up to our current lives as if we’re onto something big You can’t join the dots looking forward, but it certainly starts to make sense when you look back and reflect and realise that even that little part-time job you had as a teenager made you who you are today We’re 6 months through the year so it’s the perfect time to reflect and celebrate how far you’ve come. One of our dedicated Baristas in our Pyrmont Support Centre ☕ We sat down with Caleb to talk about his career journey and why he loves working at Hanes: Q: How did you get your job at Hanes?  A: AimBig Employment helped me on my job search. I've had two other barista roles previously before getting my current role at Hanes. Q: How did you find the recruitment and onboarding process? A: Everyone was really helpful, I transitioned into the role very easily and felt very welcome. I was given a tour of the office and got to help figure out a good spot for the coffee machine with the support of my job coach. Overall the process was quick and easy which I really liked. Q: What's your favourite part about your role and working at Hanes? A: Getting to meet and talk to lots of new people all the time. I like making coffees for the friends I've made and get to hear about their day-to-day. I've also enjoyed having the chance to set up systems and routines that work for me in my role, I feel like my own boss a little bit! Q: Do you have any advice for anyone with a disability who's starting a new job? Fascinating insights from customer interviews by Mcdonalds on why customers buy their drinks using the Jobs To Be Done framework How was the product being used? Their customer observations and research showed that: 50% of sales were before 8:30am. By individuals who came alone and only bought this. Before driving off. When asked what job they bought this for it initially confused them. But by asking questions around the problem it turned out to be: "I have a long and boring drive to work. I need something to keep me engaged on the way to work. I need something that keeps me full till 10am." How specific! The competitors weren't just in the product category of milkshakes. But foods like bananas, donuts, bagels. The competion wasn't just adjacent milkshake vendors like Wendys or Burger King but the 7x larger breakfast food category. Highlighting the importance of customer interviews and digging deeper to truly understand your customers! As marketers you could talk about attributes like taste and flavour all you want. But if your customers are hiring you for the time taken to eat your meal - then you're speaking the wrong language. What job is your product and company being hired to do? At Mondelēz International, every day is a day of new learnings and growth. This week I learnt how a small conversation with a consumer can change a lot. For my project, when I spoke to consumers for Cadbury Dairy Milk I realised so much about their perspective and the feelings that go behind every purchase. Before joining the company I was under the perception that chocolates are only an impulsive form of purchase but after talking to consumers I saw the emotional attachment with the brand. One story, in particular, captured the essence of this connection. A woman recounted a childhood memory where, after a tumble from her bicycle, her grandfather offered her a Cadbury Dairy Milk to soothe her spirits and embolden her to try again. Since then, this chocolate has become her trusted companion during moments of distress, a beacon of comfort in times of need. This touching anecdote serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact our products can have on individuals’ lives. Hmm why don't we hear more about these things? 🤔 A great example from Molson Coors Beverage Company on hiring for potential by scrapping the CV altogether. The results are encouraging, as candidates with the right mindset and values seem to be quickly thriving in their new roles. There has been a rather strong support for "hiring for potential" for more than a couple of years. It seems as if most people, at least in the talent acquisition community, can see the benefits of the approach to adress both talent shortage and to improve the diversity outcome of a hiring process. I think this is a wonderful picture of a couple of people who landed new jobs as a result of a future-looking (potential) rather than backwards-looking (direct experience) process.
