🔬#FoodSystem Science & Innovation deep dive with Social Justice as the headliner ⚖️ Access. Inclusion. Equality. Ethics. Sovereignty. Trust. Clearly, developing cutting-edge technologies for agrifood systems is only half the battle. Ensuring these are accessible, equitable, and beneficial to all requires an equally deep understanding of local social dynamics and a global commitment to justice. Today was a treasure trove of intersectionality: 🧬Gene editing: whilst the potential benefits are enormous, we must proceed with consideration for environmental and health safety concerns, as well as ensure access for small-scale producers. Needless to say it also requires careful regulation. 🚰 Water management: technological innovation is important, but equally crucial are socio-economic factors like water tenure and governance. Addressing these issues is essential for equitable access to water resources. 🤖 AI in agriculture: AI will have a transformative power but it must be developed and deployed inclusively, preventing biases & inequalities, guaranteeing access to technology, protecting intellectual property and data sovereignty. ☣️ Biotechnology for climate resilience: while exploring breakthroughs (high- or low-tech), we must ensure these technologies are accessible and affordable, particularly for the communities most impacted by climate change, but also TRUSTED! 💬 Any stories of the intersection of science, innovation and social justice in your context?

Additionally, having access to agricultural experts and methane experts at Aarhus University allows us to leverage their knowledge," says David S. 🇺🇸🌾 North Dakota secures fresh funding to boost its agtech sector. A coalition of five entities, including North Dakota State University, North Dakota Tribal College System, Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber Foundation, Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (EDC), and Grand Farm, was awarded in the US National Science Foundation (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines program. This strategic win positions these North Dakota entities to receive up to $160 million over the next decade, propelling innovation, job growth, and economic development in agtech. The award underscores the state's exceptional talent pool in agtech and recognizes the collaborative efforts that showcase how North Dakota plays a pivotal role in feeding the world. Specifically, the funding will fuel programs to tackle food insecurity, foster economic opportunities, and revolutionize crop production methodologies. Senator John Hoeven says, "We are empowering this collaboration to give farmers and ranchers tools that will strengthen their operations, reduce costs, and improve yields. That’s good not only for the production of food, fuel, and fiber, but it will spur growth for a variety of industries, including our state’s dynamic tech sector and manufacturers. That means North Dakota and our nation will continue to have a competitive edge in the global marketplace, while ensuring a high-quality and low-cost food supply for American consumers."
