We (#Phycology Research Group @GhentUniversity) are happy to contribute with a case study to the @BioGenEurope directed "Enhancing Biodiversity Genomics Applications" program. We are aiming to establish reference genomes for Porphyra linearis and Porphyra dioica to support ongoing research. This effort will improve to understand underlying fundamental processes in red macroalgal evolution, adaptation and specifically observed life cycle variations. Besides advancing fundamental knowledge in this ancient lineage of red algae, the added genomic data can help to overcome hurdles in European Porphyra valorisation. Stay tuned for updates on our journey to advance biodiversity genomics! 🧬🌿 #Genomics #Biodiversity @REA_research, @SBFI_CH, @ISBSIB @Eugreenresearch

A research team led by the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) has sequenced the complete genome of the microalgae Prymnesium parvum, which caused the devastating Oder disaster in the summer of 2022. Around 1,000 tonnes of fish, mussels and snails died in the river. By identifying the gene sequences responsible for toxin production, a crucial step towards developing an early warning system has been achieved. This will help to identify the risk factors under which the algae grows. 📖 The study has been published in the journal Current Biology. 🔍 #Science #Research #Microalgae #OderCatastrophe #Freshwater #CurrentBiology #Prymnesium #HAB https://lnkd.in/gnJpwDnn

💎💎💎Whatsapp!! 💎💎💎Automation of Liquid Handling for Long-Read Library Preparation Whole genome #sequencing (#WGS) is a #comprehensive #method that enables scientists to assess the #genetic #blueprint of diverse species and observe critical inter and intraspecies variations. WGS data allows the determination of critical #factors in #eukaryotic evolution and survival, aiding biological, biotechnological, and conservation research. The Wellcome Sanger Institute’s Darwin Tree of Life Project is one of several flagship initiatives aimed at advancing our understanding of genetic biodiversity. The Project aims to utilize WGS approaches to generate over 70,000 high-quality reference genomes covering all known species of plants, animals, fungi, and protists that live within the bounds of the British Isles. By exploring the genetic profiles of these diverse species, the Darwin Tree of Life Project aims to generate reliable and robust open-source data that can be used for ongoing study. ➡ 💎 You can find more pieces of work by clicking here. https://lnkd.in/eSG67K5G #comprehensive

🧩 Today is National Puzzle Day 🧩 At the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics we are trying to put together the world's largest puzzle- a complete picture of Earth's biodiversity using DNA-based systems for species identification. Our Barcode of Life initiative represents an ambitious effort to develop an identification system for eukaryotic life based on the analysis of sequence diversity in short, standardized gene regions. Revisit the pivotal paper by Hebert et al. (2003) titled "Biological identifications through DNA barcodes" to understand how this identification system will provide a reliable, cost-effective and accessible solution to the current problem of species identification. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g4HsnmDE #BiodiversityPuzzle #LifeOnEarth #BIOSCAN
