𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡-𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 Every trade event in India these days, with anything to do with food, has a constant attendance from enthusiastic groups selling the unique "Lakadong" turmeric from Jaintia Hills Districts of Meghalaya. The mission Lakadong of the State government aims to promote daily consumption of this high quality turmeric and thus increase farmer income in the districts. Lakadong turmeric is special because of its high circumin content. It is circumin which dictates the medicinal quality of turmeric. Lakadong, grown in a small region in Meghalaya, is reported to have ~2x the circumin. Thus, it is natural for one to feel that the Lakadong mission is very welcome (it is to a degree). More so, given that it has certainly led to increased production and marketing of this turmeric (exports included). Nonetheless, I dare call this entire exercise a waste of potential. With quite disappointment, given my personal affection with the region. In fact, I will even extend my reading to the entire NE Agri-Food sector and call Lakadong Mission symptomatic of strategic failure in most of the NE. Why? Because anyone familiar with geography of the region understands that it's a long road / rail passage to mainland India from there. That essentially means that anything low value-add from there, intended for larger Indian or Export markets, suffers an inevitable cost disadvantage over competing goods. NE simply cannot expect to compete on price; they must compete on differentiation. But what is Meghalaya selling in the name of its unique Lakadong turmeric? Well, mostly just the kitchen spice! No matter how much you make the consumers aware, you simply cannot expect them to pay 2x the price for a routine food ingredient. Certainly not just for high bio-chemical content. Not in our lifetime. Yes, you can certainly sell higher volumes but then what use? If much better price realisation could have been attained, I'll call this an opportunity wasted. Production wasted. The alternative? Well, for Lakadong, Pharma clientele could be explored more seriously. While for other things wrong with Agri-Food in the NE, some other time. In short, NE must strive to sell less but price high. APEDA Launches Dedicated Division To Boost Organic Exports In a significant move aimed at strengthening India’s organic export sector, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has unveiled a specialised organic promotion division. This new division has been established to serve as a central hub for coordinating efforts to maximise the country’s organic export capabilities. This plan includes enhancing farming techniques, streamlining certification processes, and identifying key export products, all with the goal of positioning Uttarakhand as a prominent player in the global organic market. Drawing inspiration from Sikkim’s status as India’s inaugural fully organic state, APEDA is crafting a strategic roadmap to expand exports and reinforce sustainable practices. #IndiaOrganic standard and procedures, up for review. Public Comments invited. 15 days remaining!! This is the proposed 8th edition of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) which holds the Standard for Organic Production, Value Chains, Transportation and Marketing under the India Organic Label. While section to section reading from previous Standards will reveal the differences, as they have not been published by the Nodal Authority, here are a few interesting aspects which are available for the first time (my interpretation) - 1. #PGS Participatory Guarantee System - PGS-India - has now been ingrained in the standard and recognized for reduction of conversion period - See Section 3.1.4.a 2. FSSAI has been indicated as a nodal body which regulates the "Jaivik Bharat" logo for Organic Food Products 3. Wild production is also included in this standard as before, however, local (state/panchayat) government laws are now recognized as enforceable for sustainable collection 4. It is unclear if the new standards and procedures shall increase cost and complexity of certification or reduce it. Given the inflationary pressures, the costs and complexity are bound to go up, but it is not clear if the procedure causes this increase or not. Given that India has faced increasing restriction on its Organic Food Export with regulation getting stringent in other countries, this standard update is a logical step to coherence with global changing situation. In Europe the farmers were up in arms against these strict standards, so much so that the EU had to withdraw the Green Deal even. What happens as a result of this standard to Indian farmers is yet to be understood, especially those who are reliant on exports for Incomes.
