Responding to patients who have read cancer treatment misinformation is a challenge faced by oncologists every day. In an earlier paper, my colleagues and I reported on our interviews with oncologists about how they approach these conversations. In our recently published paper, we expand on those findings by reporting the results of our latest study where we recorded oncologists talking with a standardized patient about cancer treatment misinformation. We used this data to build a Misinformation Response Model that can be tested in other health care contexts. Thanks to this great team and all of our participants! Carla L Fisher M. Empowering Change: Accelerating Lung Cancer Care Policy Forum March 21, 2024 AI assisted summary: A comprehensive discussion was held on the various facets of lung cancer care in Canada, highlighting the need for improved screening, diagnosis, treatment, and advocacy, along with the challenges of access to the latest treatments and disparities in care. Although we are moving in the right direction and treatments and outcomes have improved drastically, we are way behind the US and other countries when it comes to early diagnosis and treatments. Key Takeaways Lung cancer is the most diagnosed cancer with significant mortality, necessitating advancements in early screening and care. There is inconsistency in lung cancer care across Canada, with varying access to screening, diagnosis, and treatment options. Patient advocacy is critical, and there is a need for better support and information for patients and caregivers. Innovative treatments and targeted therapies are greatly improving outcomes, but access to these is uneven due to provincial funding models and approval delays. New diagnostic methods like blood testing offer non-invasive options, though accessibility again varies by province. The Lung Health Foundation is advocating for benchmarks and standards for diagnosis and treatment to address care discrepancies. Patients benefit from streamlined processes that reduce time from diagnosis to treatment start, improved policies that keep pace with innovative therapies, and financial accessibility of take-home drugs. https://lnkd.in/g_Vm5Q2e
