Accurate detection of methane and ammonia in the atmosphere of barns is made difficult by high particle loads in this setting. The #EUHorizon2020 RIA Code: Re-farm addresses this problem by developing a #midIR multi-gas analyzer for open-path measurements based on dispersion #spectroscopy. Through high frequency current modulation of the employed #QCLs a three-tone signal is generated and swept over the targeted ro-vibrational transitions of the analytes. As a consequence of anomalous dispersion at the resonance frequency a concentration depended phase shift results which can be detected by a square law photodetector. The induced phase shift is independent of the impinging intensities. Therefore any decrease in transmitted power due to particles present in the optical path does not affect quantification. Operating conditions reached! After months of experimenting with different swirler and fuel injection configurations, the Lund University team has successfully conducted the first liquid fuel test at design conditions with ethanol (Re=50,000 & ~140kW). This achievement marks an important milestone for the commissioning of the TARS (Tri-Annular Research Swirler) burner for experimental investigations of sustainable alternative fuels (SAF) for aeroengine applications within the framework of CESTAP Centre of Excellence. An important step for the Lund University team towards commissioning the TARS (Tri-Annular Research Swirler) burner for experimental studies on sustainable alternative fuels (SAF) within the CESTAP Centre of Excellence! After reaching operating conditions for the unconfined configuration, confined operation with an optical liner representing a quadratic cross-section combustion chamber is established. Swirl-stabilized combustion with direct liquid injection of pure ethanol is confirmed over a range of Reynolds numbers (25k<Re<35k) and equivalence ratios (0.75<ER<0.95). Just back from #ccus2024 in Houston where more than 1,600 registrants gathered to share the latest discoveries and best practices in the burgeoning field of carbon capture, utilization and storage. An overarching theme: More large-scale projects are needed not just to meet net-zero targets, but to truly advance innovation in CCUS. Great to see leadership from companies such as Baker Hughes, Petrobras, Chevron, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, SLB and Halliburton in investing in decarbonization and seeking out collaboration opportunities at events such as #ccus2024. Found it fascinating how in multiple conversations I had there were references to the esteemed Paul Feron's book on absorption-based CO2 capture (shown here via Elsevier's Knovel platform). Truly an authoritative guide on using absorbents for post-combustion capture amid a growing library of CCUS knowledge.

Hydrogen has great potential as a non-polluting energy source but transporting it long distances is challenging. One solution is to liquify the hydrogen, which requires it to be stored at very low temperatures in a completely leak-proof tank. The design of the insulating containment system is one of the most challenging and innovative parts of CERN’s collaboration with GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz). CERN's competencies in materials, cryogenics and leak-tightness can support industry in developing innovative technical solutions for maritime transportation, contributing to the emerging sustainable hydrogen supply chain and linking producers and consumers around the globe.
