The role of leaders is to solve global problems and the issue at hand is to save the planet earth from environment abuse. As mayors let each have a target of trees to plant to reduce on the effects of green house gases.
Our Global Mayors Challenge program supports local governments around the world as they build innovative solutions that address their cities’ most difficult challenges. Follow along as our Government Innovation team travels to Freetown City Council to check-in on #FreetownTheTreeTown, the city’s Global Mayors Challenge-winning project. The initiative is tackling deforestation and putting Freetown on track to plant, grow, and digitally monitor 5 million trees by 2030–protecting the land, and improving sustainability, for generations to come. Great to be back at my university #USC for the #LABC Sustainability Summit! So many impressive speakers today including California Senator Alex Padilla who shared that “environmental stewardship and economic growth are inextricably linked” and California EPA Secretary Yana Garcia who mentioned the tremendous policy opportunities and the states drive to net zero and a circular economy given that we have “one planet, one atmosphere, one set of resources” and I would add #Onewater. To wrap up the summit, LABC chair David Nahai, LADWP Water Chief of Staff Evelyn Cortez-Davis, #HDRs Joseph Nye, MWD Board Member and Director Heal the Bay Tracy Quinn, and LASAN GM Barbara Romero are commenting on Southern CA’s Water Future. Key takeaways: - We know we are overly reliant on imported water and must diversify our water portfolio to increase our local supply reliability. - One of the large-scale solutions and one of two large water programs in the region, Pure Water LA’s vision is to “Increase and optimize the City’s local supplies and support the transition to 70 percent local water by maximizing the production of purified recycled water as part of a diversified water portfolio in an affordable manner to mitigate risks from climate change and ensure an equitable and resilient future for the region.” - In contrast, on a hyper-local scale, we can limit wasting water and focus on water conservation and water efficiency. AB1572 bans irrigation of non functional turf with drinking water. We all can play a part in saving water. #fighton for a more sustainable future!

Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity, also known as Biodiversity Day. Biodiversity is an integral part of NCC’s sustainable development framework, which serves as the foundation for our sustainability efforts. Across all the countries in which we operate, we strive to reduce negative impacts and enhance positive effects on biodiversity. For instance, when constructing according to BREEAM environmental certification or EU taxonomy, criteria related to land use and ecology are always part of the project to safeguard biodiversity. BREEAM’s criteria assess solutions such as site selection, protection, and enhancement of ecological features, ultimately contributing to the ecological value of the building. Long-term impacts on biodiversity and a building’s carbon footprint are also considered within the criteria. Using fewer materials supports the preservation of biodiversity. We are on the right track by constructing durable solutions, renovating old buildings, and using resources responsibly. Promoting biodiversity is best achieved by tailoring actions to the unique conditions of each project or area, combining multiple measures. Read more about NCC's sustainability work below:

The Unlimited Group's 2023 Sustainability Report is available and ready to read. In the report we focus on our sustainability pillars and dive into the data and stories for each. Our six sustainability pillars are: 🌍 Carbon footprint 🍽 Food waste 📦 Sustainable packaging 🌱 Soil health 🐝 Biodiversity ⚖ Equality This report showcases our continuous efforts and commitment to sustainable practices. It highlights our achievements, challenges, and future goals, demonstrating our dedication to creating a more sustainable future for all. As one of the primary expectations in my role, it was daunting taking on the task of publishing the Sustainability Report so soon after joining the company. I have to thank my team and all the Sustainability Champions for all their hard work and unwavering commitment to capturing the data and writing the stories for the report. I'm excited for what's to come. As a team, we decided to refresh the colour palette and design of the report. Scott Armstrong talks here about the importance of including nature in part of your wider corporate strategy. There are many great examples of businesses taking baby steps with dedicated rewilding zones on company land, bee keeping projects, etc. as well as some much bigger investments in forest restoration, and nature based investments. Is this on your radar? Cogent Action

I am excited to share our latest publication in Nature Sustainability, where we explore the unintended global impacts of the European Green Deal on land use, carbon emissions, and biodiversity. This work sheds light on the complex interplay between local/regional policies and global ecological outcomes. Our findings reveal that while the EGD aims for substantial ecological restoration and carbon removal within the EU, it could potentially increase agricultural land demand outside Europe. This shift could lead to a surge in land-use-related carbon emissions, significantly overshadowing the EGD's carbon removal targets. Additionally, this expansion could result in biodiversity losses challenging the benefits of EGD’s conservation-focused import policies. To address these issues, we propose strategies focused on reducing meat and dairy consumption, which could significantly mitigate these adverse spillover impacts and align consumer behavior with sustainable environmental outcomes. The role of policy, public awareness, and willingness to change diets are crucial in shaping a sustainable future. Our research emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies that consider both local/regional achievements and global repercussions. Sustainability is key to the future. Healthy and diverse ecosystems provide many services to society, including water filtration, biodiversity, habitat protection, and carbon sequestration. When it comes to sustainability, there is strong support for incentives related to environmental sustainability versus outright government regulation. One way to incentivize sustainability is to create some sort of biodiversity index or a label, as with Bird Friendly® coffee. 🦉 🖤 ☕ BUT I want to know what YOU think! So, let's get this discussion going. Let me know your thoughts in the comments ⬇ ❓ In your own words, can you please share what sustainability means to you. ❓ When it comes to non-expert audiences, do you think "healthy" would serve as a good adjective to describe ecosystems? ❓ What are some other ways you think sustainability can be incentivized? #sustainability #sustainabilityjourney #ecosystems
