A new study has shown that only 5% of new therapies passing animal trials were successfully approved for human consumption. The researchers looked at 367 therapeutic interventions and found that only 14 passed human clinical trials. Why? The scientists conclude that animal studies are often poorly designed, invalidating their results. They also point to "notable discrepancies in the contexts of animal testing versus human application" which can lead to less relevant results. Indeed, while yesterday marked "World Day for Animals Used in Laboratories", our commitment to advancing human-relevant research methods remains steadfast. It's a sobering reality that millions of animals continue to be bred and killed for research purposes annually, often without ever being utilized in experiments. As we reflect on this, it's crucial to recognize the inefficiencies and ethical concerns inherent in traditional animal testing methods. Research indicating that only 25% of observed toxic effects in animals may translate to humans further underscores the need for more relevant and predictive testing approaches. Our focus remains on driving change and embracing innovative solutions. By championing alternatives with a human centric approach, we aim to advance research while reducing reliance on animal experimentation. Together, let's continue to advocate for human-relevant research methods and work towards a future where scientific progress is achieved with greater accuracy, compassion, and efficiency. #invitro #nonanimaltesting #humanrelevant #preclinic #productdevelopment

💡 Improving transparency in animal research using ARRIVE guidelines Reporting ANY area of bioscience research using laboratory animals "Issues around the reproducibility of research involving animals cause significant concern among scientists, funders, and policy makers. Transparent and accurate reporting is a cornerstone of reproducibility. It allows the research to be assessed effectively so it can inform future research, policy, and clinical practice. However, animal research publications often lack important information, which prevents adequate evaluation of the methods and findings. To address this, the ARRIVE guidelines were first published in 2010. The updated guidelines – ARRIVE 2.0 – were released in 2020, along with a separate Explanation and Elaboration document providing further context."
