Blood cancer is a type of cancer that affects the production and function of blood cells and is caused by changes (mutations) in the DNA within the cells. Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are some of the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is the third biggest cause of cancer deaths and an estimated one million people across the world die from it each year. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, and Bionical Emas is joining those raising awareness of blood cancer, its symptoms, and its impact, showing support to friends and families affected by these cancers. #ThisIsBloodCancer

Today is #WorldOvarianCancer day. Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer, causing 140,000 deaths each year. Despite this danger, it is still not yet well understood. As with most cancers, more research is needed in this field to improve survival rates. Until we have better research, early detection is your greatest chance of surviving ovarian cancer. That's why World Ovarian Cancer Coalition is spreading awareness of symptoms, with this year's theme being "No Woman Left Behind". During September, please learn about this cancer - it's not the "good cancer" as many people assume. Thyroid cancer is not a single disease but a group of cancers with different types, such as papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer. Each type has a different prognosis, treatment approach, and risk level. Understanding these differences is crucial for recognizing that some types, like papillary thyroid cancer, are highly treatable, while others, like anaplastic thyroid cancer, can be more aggressive. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, a global initiative dedicated to educating and raising awareness about this group of cancers. Blood cancers occur when blood cells are not made correctly by your body and are then overproduced, so they spill into the bloodstream and impact different parts of the body.¹ The most common three types of blood cancer are Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. To learn more about these types of blood cancer including symptoms, please click through to our blog post titled 'Blood Cancer Awareness Month: Shedding Light on an Important Cause'. https://lnkd.in/gV6CE3Mk #designingbettercare #Bloodcancerawarenessmonth #cancercare 1. Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) refers to the fact that the cancer cells do not have progesterone or estrogen receptors, and don’t make any or too much of the protein called HER2. TNBC gets its name because the cells test "negative" on all 3 tests. According to the American Cancer Society, TNBC accounts for 10-15% of all breast cancers. These cancers tend to be more common in women younger than 40, who are African American, or who have a BRCA1 mutation. To learn more about TNBC, visit: https://lnkd.in/gFSANKun

When cancer metastasises, some cancer cells can stop dividing and hide in a ‘dormant’ state, tucked away in niches, such as the inner lining of bones. Garvan’s Cancer Plasticity and Dormancy program, led by Prof Peter Croucher with A/Prof Christine Chaffer, aims to solve one of cancer’s biggest challenges - eradicating dormant cancer cells before they can awaken and cause relapse. Please join us in helping end this deadly threat, accelerating the day when we not only treat, but cure cancer. Find out more: https://ow.ly/sNpu50S7Rnm

Although 99% of cancer cases occur in adults, approximately 1 in 5 children diagnosed with cancer won't make it through, and most of the causes for childhood cancers are still unknown. Childhood cancer could occur anywhere in the body, with the most common types for children under age 15 being leukemia (28%), brain cancer (26%), and lymphoma (12%). Even with the same cancer origin, the behavior of childhood cancer can still differ from adult cancers. Let's raise awareness and support for these brave young fighters, making a difference in their lives, and striving for better outcomes together. The Academy was pleased to join The Australian Academy of Science as a key partner in developing the 10-year Blood Cancer Research Roadmap – a blueprint for accelerating research that improves both blood cancer survivor rates. The Research Roadmap was launched yesterday at the Blood 2024 conference in Brisbane by Academy Fellows Professor Wendy Erber FAHMS and Professor Andrew Roberts AM FAHMS FAA, alongside Bill Stavreski – Head of Research at the Leukemia Foundation. Blood cancers are the third most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in Australia and the third-largest cause of cancer deaths. There are over 120 different types of blood cancer with little currently known about how or why many blood cancers develop. https://lnkd.in/g5tRqp24
