Sustainable development is not only about responsibility to our planet. It should also be about designing, building and managing properties better. Real Estate is a great investment but are we investing in future quality of living as well? Next time you look at a real estate investment ask yourself about sustainability and what it means for the property both now and in the future. What if I told you that you could invest in projects that not only have an environmental responsibility but provide a healthy financial and social return as well? What if your next investment property was fun, less risky and designed to cost less to operate? What if the people you are responsible for providing shelter for actually became more healthy, more productive and profitable themselves? Their success would mean more future success for you instead of just a rent payment or capital gain. Currently you can go stay at a super lux resort for $7-10K per night and rub elbows with who ever is staying there. You can experience something amazing that leaves you a changed person but where will you go live after that visit? I am not saying we need to build places that cost that much to stay in, but why are we not focused on actually creating spaces we don't want to leave. Think about it, and give real thought to that project you're considering investing in. Will it be a place you love, that's fun and has massive potential for a positive impact on human quality of living? Some of us want a higher standard that next level! If you doubt building better can be more profitable you may have the wrong team. If you have a good team and want them to build better start with a better plan to reduce waste during the process and provide an incentive for them to do so. Found this strategy that I created in 2013 for sustainability. At the time of course the uphill struggle was 'recycling' and these phrases dominated sustainability narratives. This to me was a wasted opportunity to educate and engage more broadly in communities on the paradigm shift that we would inevitably need to get to. This was my first strategy to connect the benefits of circular thinking to community cohesion and mobilisation of jobs through points 5, 6 and 7. I secured funding for programmes in community centres focussed on intergenerational skill share that leaned into creating a place for people recovering from various forms of social exclusion (be that illness, recovering from abusive relationships, battling mental health issues or many more...). We aimed to create a community based support that would eventually drive income streams that they could fit in with their wellbeing needs while diverting from landfill. Zac has always championed my work but we were both a decade too early to the party... Zac has been embedded in holistic sustainability for most of his life (please do take binary politics out in this instance). Stumbling on this raises a "meet them where they are" - missed opportunity issue in terms of funding and application of key sustainability issues within corporations, government or communities. 'Meet them where they are' is the common objective of most agencies for instance - but it is an endorsement of sorts of Business as Usual (BAU). When we 'meet thinking where it is' we in some ways let the conversation be led by the least mature thinking of the topic. If we are talking chess or religion for instance that might be respectful.... but with sustainability we do not have time to allow organic knowledge evolution and we must find ways to leapfrog stages of this in order that we drive the paradigm part of sustainability. This juxtaposition is coming to a peak as tensions between BAU and a sustainable future reach a breaking point for many. Just this week we have seen a conflict within sustainability in response to the 'terrifying' statement from UN climate chief Simon Stiell that we have just ‘Two years to save the world’: as he makes plea for more money as disasters spiral."* Whilst some feel that we will loose people if we use fear language others believe we need to motivate action with honesty - even if that involves frightening facts. So.... when we have so much at stake - yet the necessary finance is most often rooted in BAU thinking... ***how do we get 'them (everyone) to meet us (with a maturity in sustainability knowledge) where we are - and they need to be?*** Also - lets modernise 7Rs collectively? Today is World Earth Day and we are proud to highlight the work of Geelong Sustainability, a for-purpose community organisation that supports residents of Geelong and surrounding regions to be more sustainable in their everyday lives. Since its establishment in 2007, Geelong Sustainability has become the region’s leading sustainability group with extensive networks in community, government and business throughout Geelong and the Barwon region. It is recognised for its evidence-based innovative projects, which educate and support the community’s transition to a net zero, circular economy. “The community wants to change, or make improvements, but lacks the time, expertise and understanding of where to start, and also the upfront capital”, said Tania Bartlett, Marketing & Communications Coordinator at Geelong Sustainability. “Our Community Power Hub is focused on helping for-purpose organisations with these challenges as well as removing the burden that rising energy costs place on community organisations.” The Community Power Hub addresses these challenges by offering expert advice, an understanding of the energy industry, and guidance on sustainable energy practices, all while enabling these organisations to focus on their core services. “The program also offers access to the Community Energy Revolving Fund, which provides no-interest loans to support local for-purpose organisations in accessing energy upgrades,” said Tania. The Geelong Community Foundation provided Sustainability Geelong with a $50,000 grant in the 2022-23 Grant Round that has driven the following outcomes: 🌱Sustainability Geelong has worked with over 30 locally-based for-purpose organisations including churches, food relief hubs, sporting clubs, and community and hobby groups; 🌱It has helped people to assess rooftop solar and batteries, with long terms plans to move away from gas, apply for grants, find better energy deals, energy efficiency, and to fix other related problems such as insulation; 🌱Over 70kW has already been installed by participants with a further 70kW in advanced discussion. Groups have also installed efficiency upgrades to cut costs, replacing old freezers and installing efficient heaters. When asked about the importance of World Earth Day, Tania hopes that it continues to bring more awareness to the plight of our planet and how we can each make individual changes. “Working in the area, it has been inspiring to see how much work various groups are already doing within their own organisations in order to cut emissions,” she said. “The Community Power Hub is here to boost and support these efforts, and continue to get these projects moving forward.” #GivingForever
