💰How can we tell what’s a “green” investment?    The EU Taxonomy is an important tool to help validate activities that represent an ambitious standard of sustainability. But, in the building and construction sector, it is in danger of lagging behind.    Read our latest policy briefing here: https://lnkd.in/exQPmykV     The EU Taxonomy climate related criteria are up for review and the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance is consulting on its preliminary recommendations. Our policy briefing sets out recommendations on how to better integrate life cycle global warming potential (GWP) (known as whole life carbon) requirements for new buildings in line with the 2024 revision to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).    The revised EPBD mandates Member States to develop life cycle GWP targets and limits by 2027. The taxonomy needs to be swiftly updated to reflect these changes so that it can differentiate truly green investments from those that simply follow the legislated performance standards for all buildings.    In the latest policy briefing, we:    🔎 Look closely at the EPBD and the EU Taxonomy – and their respective life cycle GWP requirements.    🇪🇺 Provide recommendations for the European Commission.    These recommendations target improvements in data collection, capacity building, usability and compliance. 🌍 Yesterday, the UN Environment Programme recognised its International Day of Clean Energy, which was declared to raise awareness and mobilise action for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.    Fossil fuels are the largest contributor to global climate change and account for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of all carbon dioxide emissions.     Buildings account for 37% of global energy-related emissions. So how do we build the transition to a zero-carbon future?      🛢️ We need to eliminate the use of fossil fuels across our industry. Currently electricity only accounts for 35% of buildings’ energy use. We therefore need to shift to using electricity for essential functions, where possible, such as heating and cooling, as well as other facilities that utilise gas, oil, and other fossil fuels.      ☀️ But to fully decarbonise, the electricity generation needs to shift to low-carbon sources too – such as renewables providing on-site power from solar or heat pumps or switching to green energy from the power grid.      💰 These upgrades are typically more efficient, reducing energy demand and offering cost savings, as well as creating more healthy homes and outdoor spaces.      📢 Take action today.
