Over the last year I've worked with over 100 SMEs to help them calculate their carbon footprint and create a strategy to reduce it. Often, businesses start feeling overwhelmed and concerned they're behind the curve. But with a few simple tools it's easy to create a footprint, then we can begin making a practical and cost-effective reduction plan. In the ever-evolving landscape of #sustainability, #carboncredits have emerged as a crucial tool for organizations to offset their carbon emissions. These credits represent a unit of measurement that quantifies the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. By purchasing carbon credits, companies can support projects that actively reduce or remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It's vital to recognize that not all carbon credits are created equal. There are various standards and certification programs that validate the legitimacy and quality of carbon credits. Leaders must conduct due diligence to ensure they are investing in credits that have a genuine impact on combating climate change. Furthermore, they should be aware of the different types of carbon offset projects available. These projects can range from #renewableenergy initiatives to #reforestation efforts and #methanecapture projects. Each project type has its own unique benefits and considerations, so leaders must align their organization's values and goals with the most appropriate project.

Politicians appear to be cooling on climate policy. Doesn’t mean your company has to provided you always remember..... Business strategies should never be reactive or short term. They require planning, resource allocation, skill development and growth management. So green issues should be treated the same way as any other strategic or commercial decision — on their individual merits and based on what is in the long-term best interests of your business. Here are some questions company management teams should ask: 1.   How much do our customers care about the climate or net zero targets? Is it enough for them to actually change their purchasing decisions? Will they stop buying our product altogether, switch to a different brand (with better climate credentials) or just continue to buy regardless? 2.   If our customers don’t make climate-driven purchases today, how likely is that to change in the future? Will it be driven by changing attitudes (e.g. as we see more extreme weather events)? Or by a demographic change (e.g. as Gen Z becomes a larger proportion of our customer base)? 3.   Will our climate strategies affect our hiring and retention capability? 4.   Is there a threshold of action we need to cross to prepare for changes to customer or staff behaviour? For example, is it enough to plan to be net zero by 2030 or do we need to do it sooner? Alternatively, could it be delayed provided we demonstrate a credible carbon reduction plan? Do we actually need to decarbonise (which is more expensive) or can we use (cheaper) carbon offsets? Will our customers see the latter as greenwashing? Once you have the answers to these questions, you'll be better prepared for what you need to do next — what impact it could have on your sales, what it could cost and how it should be communicated.
