The 10 biggest biopharma companies have all reported Q1 results, and they earned ~$120 billion in revenue. Here is some context behind what drove the biggest increases and declines: 1. Three companies achieved growth of >20%. For Lilly and Novo, it was the continued ramp up of their GLP-1s, which are still in the early innings of their growth story. Amgen's growth was driven by its $28B acquisition of Horizon, without which growth would have been a more modest 6%. 2. Several companies continued to face lingering after-effects from Covid: Pfizer was the biggest, but J&J and Roche also had larger than usual declines thanks to Covid-product sales trailing off. Excluding the decline in Covid vaccine and Paxlovid sales, Pfizer's revenue actually grew 11%, which indicates future quarters will see more positive results. 3. AbbVie managed to keep sales flat, despite facing significant disruption to its biggest-selling medicine, Humira. Humira began to face full competition in the US last year, but strong sales increases of its other immunology medicines Skyrizi and Rinvoq enabled AbbVie to keep immunology and overall revenues essentially unchanged, showing the benefits of its years-long work to diversify its pipeline.

This is very interesting to see the growth in revenue, while seeing how some of these companies are positioning.

It will be important to see the impact of GLP-1 Drug on the economies from the adverse events perspective and at the same time it will be important to see how companies such as NovoNordisk and Eli Lilly manage demand for these drugs . One of the most encouraging findings about GLP-1s in clinical trials so far has been the relative absence of serious side effects but we need to conduct further studies for the global population!

#Article: There were changes at the top and the bottom of last year’s #top20pharmarankingsbyrevenue. And, in between, Novo Nordisk made a significant leap, jumping five spots propelled by skyrocketing sales of its #diabetes and #obesity treatments #Ozempic and #Wegovy. Accounting for the changes at the high and low ends of the rankings were plummeting sales of #COVID19 products. At the top, Pfizer ceded the No. 1 slot as its revenue tumbled 41% from an industry record $100.3 billion in 2022 to $58.5 billion last year. The difference was directly attributable to declining sales of #COVIDvaccine #Comirnaty and #COVID #antiviral #Paxlovid. After the duo combined for sales of $56.7 billion in 2022, they fell all the way to a combined $12.5 billion last year. Regaining the top spot on the 2023 list is Johnson & Johnson, which had a sales increase of 6.5% to $85.2 billion. It’s a familiar perch for J&J, which had a decade-long run from 2012 to 2021 as the industry’s revenue leader. J&J was No. 1 in 2023 by a comfortable margin over No. 2 Roche, which raked in sales of $58.7 billion Swiss francs ($67 billion) last year. J&J’s big lead is especially noteworthy considering the drugmaker’s 2022 spinoff of its health unit Kenvue, which accounted for sales of $15.4 billion in 2023. Add that figure to J&J’s revenue last year, and the company would have been the second in industry history to top the $100 billion mark in annual sales. At the bottom of the rankings, dropping out of the top 20, were prolific #COVIDvaccine sellers Moderna and BioNTech SE, which occupied the No. 18 and No. 20 slots, respectively, in 2022, with sales of $19.3 billion and 17.3 billion euros ($18.2 billion). Both were also among the industry’s top 20 in 2021, but, last year, their revenues tumbled to $6.8 billion and 3.8 billion euros ($4.1 billion). After four straight years in the No. 17 slot, Novo made its big leap, passing No. 13 Takeda, No. 14 Gilead Sciences, No. 15 Amgen, No. 16 Bayer and No. 17 Boehringer Ingelheim. Each of those companies, except for Amgen, posted sales declines in 2023. Novo had the highest year-over-year sales increase of any drugmaker in the top 20 last year at 31% as revenue jumped from 177 billion Danish kroner ($25.1 billion) to 232.3 billion Danish kroner ($33.7 billion). Drugs and it's pricing: Never-ending conundrum As the deadline for #drugprice talks under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) approaches on July 31, I'm reflecting on how this impacts our industry. The IRA is a law aimed at controlling inflation, which includes measures to reduce prescription drug costs. Novartis CEO mentioned that the initial cost cuts “might be manageable” in the short term, especially for the first few products included in the IRA. For the first 10 drugs up for IRA price negotiations, they're already nearing their patent cliffs with generics expected soon. Taking Entresto, Novartis' heart failure combo drug, which is one of the 10 meds up for IRA price adjustments effective in 2026. We expect Entresto #generics by mid-2025, but we're still defending several #patents to potentially extend market exclusivity. The real #challenge will come when hundreds of drugs are on this list, especially those earlier in their life cycle. It’s tough for companies to manage IRA’s impact when they need more time to hit peak sales and returns. By the end of July, companies and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will set the maximum fair prices for these 10 drugs, with results out by Sept. 1. #J&J, with three meds on the list, has received Medicare's final price offers and plans to maintain their projection of 5% to 7% sales growth from 2025 to 2030. On a positive note, Novartis is aiming for an average sales growth of 5% or more from 2023 to 2028. Despite Entresto’s patent cliff, the company is optimistic about the growth every year. Looking at the 20 top pharma companies by market cap reveals some clear trends, yet others are more subtle: #Medicalscienceliaison #MedicalAffairs #PharamceuticalIndustry While Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have long been in the top 20, only in the last ~2 years have they broken into the top tier, thanks to their GLP-1s. Lilly is now amongst the 10 most valuable companies in the world, across all industries. While weight loss drugs have gotten the headlines, others delivered impressive gains over the last 3 years as well: AstraZeneca increased its value by ~50%, largely thanks to its strong oncology portfolio, with blockbusters like Tagrisso that delivered ~$6B in sales in FY2023. Meanwhile, Regeneron and Vertex almost doubled their value, driven by Dupixent/Eylea and Trikafta respectively.
