Join us as we celebrate the 5th anniversary of BioSymetrics' Canadian subsidiary this week! We started our Canadian operations in 2019 from a little office space in Toronto. Since then our Canadian team has expanded beyond Toronto, to Charlottetown on the east coast and Vancouver on the west coast! Our Canadian Machine Learning team has been at the forefront of various BioSymetrics technologies, including our proprietary Phenograph, Computer Vision, and MOA Miner platforms. Special thanks to Gabriel Musso, Victoria Catterson , and Kevin Ha for co-founding our Canadian team and paving the way for our future success!

Fantastic initiative, and a real pleasure to be part of it. Hearing about the experiences of other centres across the globe makes clear how important but also how incredibly fragile the whole field is: most centres lack robust infrastructure support and investment, making it difficult to run and maintain activities and, especially, to build and secure the next generation(s) of scholars in the area. For example, for any PhD student we would like to support at the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good, we need to find and secure a total funding of around £75,000-£120,000. Thereafter, to fund a single postdoctoral position one is looking at a minimum of £50,000 per annum (including National Insurance, pension, in costs, etc.) that need to be raised. Then, in the absence of any permanent positions in the area over here, all that investment, time, support, and the expertise that has been built over that period, currently often do not even benefit the Scottish (and at times European) philanthropy research field as early career colleagues are faced with an infinitesimally small number of national and international opportunities that might arise but, more likely than not, do not, leading to exits and brain drain from the field in general. So, assuming that one considers the field and its contributions to be important, there is some real work to be done about making it more sustainable in general, but also more attractive and accessible for younger researchers... Just some of the many issues that will need to be explored as part of our forthcoming workshop series “Together for Good: crafting Scotland’s philanthropic journey” - https://lnkd.in/e5tXgmZR
Brain trust! Nearly 40 directors of research centers from as many global locations gathered in Antwerp yesterday, as part of an ongoing network-building initiative of the Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) and the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR). RAC Director of Research & Engagement Barbara Shubinski facilitated the day's meetings, along with the support of Associate Director for Research & Engagement Rachel Wimpee PhD. Thank you to meeting co-organizers, ISTR executive director Margery Daniels, and ISTR director of programs (and soon to be executive director) Megan Haddock!

Parmigiano Reggiano PDO and Grana Padano PDO are different! 🧀 Forget blind patriotism; spectral detectors and multivariate analysis (okay, let's call it machine learning for the cool factor) tell the real story. 🌎 We set up a very international team led by Giorgia Stocco to explore the use of NIR and Raman spectroscopy for the prediction of quality traits in PDO cheeses. The fruit of this collaboration between Università degli Studi di Parma, Laura G. Gómez-Mascaraque, Gaurav Kr Deshwal (Teagasc), Jordi Cruz Sanchez (IRTA), Consorzio del formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano, Paolo Berzaghi, (Università degli Studi di Padova) and Georgi Gergov (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) is available online now at Frontiers Food and Nutrition, section Food Chemistry. ✔️ Here are the key facts: -NIR and Raman-based PLS-DA models successfully differentiate Grana Padano PDO and Parmigiano Reggiano. -The fusion of the spectra improves the prediction accuracy for the cheese composition and texture in some cases 🔎 This proof of feasibility is encouraging us to keep researching on the topic to improve the prediction robustness! 🇪🇺 This study was funded by the sensorFINT - COST ACTION CA19145, allowing us to go perform the analysis at Teagasc in Ashtown and Fermoy
Happy to tell you I’ve published the tastiest article I’ve ever done! Joining my passions, chemometrics, spectroscopy, and cheese. Special thanks to Giorgia Stocco, Arnaud Molle, Laura Gómez Gómez-Mascaraque, to my friend Georgi Gergov, and the rest of the team! Thank you, Scottsdale! It’s been two weeks since EUCG kicked off our 2024 Fall Workshop with 210 attendees from 51 companies, a warm welcome from Mayor David Ortega of Scottsdale, and Keynotes from Jacob Tetlow, Executive Vice President at Arizona Public Service Company, and Dr. Joe Hoagland, Vice President of Innovation and Research, at Tennessee Valley Authority! Here’s what some of our members had to say about their workshop takeaways and experiences: “All of the T&D presentations were incredibly useful! Best Practices - Reliability, Storm Readiness, LiDAR, Distribution Pole Mgmt, and Storeroom 5S.” “Learning how folks are leveraging new technologies like Power BI. The TerraPower presentation was really helpful in understanding the future direction of the industry.” “The Hydro Productivity Committee made some major improvements to our Shiny Analysis Tool for Annual Cost Data. We will be able to use this to show leadership some actionable insights into how we stack up against other utilities in our spending.” “The workshop and keynote sessions covered extremely relevant topics for the utility industry. I learned so much and will definitely be sharing new knowledge about metrics, best practices, and technology with my coworkers. This workshop made me excited to be an EUCG member!” EUCG’s committees worked diligently to bring best practices, benchmarking, and industry data analysis to our member companies. We’d like to send out a special thanks to TerraPower, Sandia National Laboratories, and Idaho National Laboratory for their guest presentations and contributions to this workshop! Our BESS Working Group had yet another full house for their day-long session, with several new member companies in attendance. In EUCG’s continuing efforts to stay ahead of the curve in identifying and delivering products and services to meet the needs of member companies, EUCG President, Andrew Campbell, TVA, and Innovation and Technology Director, Adam Preveau, Entergy, introduced the newly formed Innovation Working Group which held an in-person full day session on September 18th. The goal of the group is to dive into emerging industry technologies, and what utilities are prioritizing for the future. Stay tuned for information on this exciting new venture! We’re already preparing for St. Petersburg in April 2025. We hope to see everyone there!

Happy Monday LinkedIn... - Do you sit in panel discussions at conferences with a valuable question or topic that you run out of time to ask? - Are you bored of hearing each panellist give a 5 minute corporate introduction full of pre-rehearsed sound bites that leaves less time for an actual discussion? - Do you find pre-scripted and pre-arranged questions less relevant to the topic of the panel? We want to change that. I'm working with RX Global and Oceanology International and will be hosting a series of expert panel sessions at the Excel next week. These will be 100% audience-led, with no corporate introductions, and the only topic that matters is how we can improve our industry. We can take the discussion in any direction we want. Discussions will be interactive, with the ability to pivot to interesting or controversial topics brought up by the audience, or those taking part on stage, in an effort to have a frank and worthwhile conversation about how we can all work to improve our industry. We all know things need to change, so let's start the conversation. I'm being joined across the three days by a great group of panellists to discuss your questions and offer their views: Rachael Burden (XOCEAN), Alex Searle (G5 Geoconsulting), Andrew Kirkland (Corio Generation), Andrew Deeks (bp), Chelsea Bradbury (The Crown Estate), Will Hodshon (Vysus Group), Dan Morgan (Scottish Power), Jennie Morgan (Seaway7), Phil Payne (National Grid), Marc Richards (Moray West), Ben Hooker (Oceaneering), Francesca Ghigi (N-Sea), Gareth Ellery (Global Maritime), Will Rowley (Offshore Solutions Group), and Chris Almond (Kraken Robotics) Here's the links to the Oceanology website with details. All sessions take place in the Ocean Futures Theatre on the exhibition floor. 12th March, 12.45: Session 1 - Site selection & development (https://lnkd.in/eiW759Zx) 13th March, 10.15: Session 2 - Construction & commissioning (https://lnkd.in/eBxjA7p8) 14th March, 10.15: Session 3 - Long term operations (https://lnkd.in/eN6MpzZY) #oceanologyinternational #paneldiscussion #different #netzero #joinus
