Does lightning strike from the sky down or the ground up?⚡️The answer is both, depending on the type of lightning. There are three main types: cloud-to-cloud (CC), cloud-to-ground (CG), and intra-cloud (IC) lightning. Cloud-to-ground lightning originates from the sky, but the visible part actually comes from the ground up. Tall structures like sky scrapers, wind turbines, and TV antennas can trigger upward lightning discharges, like the ones seen here. A typical CG flash sends an invisible path of negative electricity toward the ground. As opposites attract, tall objects on the ground often send out a positive upward streamer. When these paths connect, a return stroke races back up, creating the visible flash. This process happens so quickly that we only see the final flash. It's fascinating to see⚡️in suuuuper slow motion!

This exact phenomena is happening to your #windturbines, causing damage. Ensure lightning strikes attach to the LPS - as designed - with StrikeTape. Our ongoing research shows that many blade damages are the cause of long duration, upward lightning strikes. Lightning detection networks have a hard time deciphering these... If you have a major lightning damage - look at lightning data, if it doesn't show a strike = more than likely it was an upward strike. We can help. www.weatherguardwind.com | Weather Guard Lightning Tech Questions? Joel.Saxum@wglightning.com #windenergy #lightning #protection #subjectmatterexperts

On a step-down transformer arcing horn are found on the primary side connections (bushings). When a high voltage event (i.e., lightning) occurs the air in the air gap breaks down (ionizes), and the energy arcs to earth. Arcing horns are used as protection against overvoltage mainly due to lightning.

Unraveling the Impact of Lightning Strikes Lightning strikes, a natural phenomenon of immense power, occur when electrical discharge from thunderstorms finds a path to the ground. These strikes can manifest in various forms, from cloud-to-ground bolts that directly hit structures or people to intra-cloud or cloud-to-cloud lightning that illuminates the sky with breathtaking displays. Each year, lightning strikes cause significant damage, from fires ign... Never use suspended scaffolds in high winds or storms. Wind can drive platforms into walls, and wire ropes attract lightning. If winds exceed 25 MPH or the weather looks dicey, stay grounded. Safety comes before schedules. #JobsiteSafety #EmployeeSafety #HealthyJobsite
