A student grows not inside the classroom walls but outside it , diving deep into new environment and testing everything out . Attendance policy is something which cripples the student from exploring that freedom , the freedom to be creative . What is the point of attendance when the student with 95% attendance failed while the student with least attendance is doing good. Now people will say that freedom can be misused . Well , what if they don't . It is honestly upto the students to use it for their goodness. IIT Bombay has started sending attendance details of the first year students to their parents every 15 days from October 2024. The administration has faced strong backlash from the student body of IIT Bombay, who feel that it infringes on their freedom and increases pressure. Ironically the decision to send attendance records to the parents was taken to reduce stress on the students. Contrast this with the zero attendance policy of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. The policy empowers students to choose the classes that they are interested in. Many successful alumni credit this policy for fostering creativity and ambition in their careers. I believe we should inspire students to learn instead of monitoring them and this approach has to start with Tier-1 institutes like Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

zero attendance policy for students seems quite interesting for many students but may not be the case for everyone. it is a question on the classroom teaching pedagogy and endorses irrelevancy of it. i ask what is an institution? is it a building, infrastructure, exam system or something else? according to me institution is a dialogue among the students as well as teachers. if this activity is not happening then where is the institution? convenience is selling everywhere it should not happen in education.

University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently come under scrutiny for approving the Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP) offered by BITS Pilani. This approval, granted during the UGC's 548th meeting on September 9, 2020, has sparked controversy due to the lack of a hands-on practical component in these online engineering courses. Concerns have been raised that BITS Pilani is distributing these degrees indiscriminately, raising questions about the quality and credibility of the education provided. Despite the growing concerns, the UGC has yet to establish comprehensive regulations to address these issues, leaving a significant gap in oversight and accountability.  

This policy has been in existence for close to 5 decades. Look at the profiles of BITS Pilani Alumni. Comparable to the top 3 IITs. Over 6400+ founders/co-founders of companies, 15 unicorn founders, over 7500 CEOs/VPs in large corporates, over 3500 faculty members in top institutions world over etc. With an acceptance rate of 2%, getting into BITS Pilani campuses is as tough as any old IIT. These are bright students and they have a choice. There are continuous assessments though. Also, the onus is on the faculty to be innovative and attract the students to class. Students can also select their teachers in BITS Pilani and make their own time table. For Institutions like BITS Pilani, which have the credibility and attract such high quality students, this works fine. May not work for all.

Yes Navkaran Singh, Well Said! Actually Everything has changed in this country except that conventional Policies of schools & colleges, Respect to Attendance, Assignments, Internals And What not! So What I have seen over the years, See it could be conflicting too, but it’s a bitter truth of all those tier 2 & 3 private colleges, that they ain't accountable & responsible for your future. They only want you to follow their old worn out rules & regulations. Well, If you still think those so called Professors ain't knowing what they're doing are sometimes known as "exploitation" then you couldn't grown up yet, they know everything! But Again "Pratistha, Parampara & Anushaashan"....They couldn't move on, you know why?....Because they don't want to! While reading... your experiences must be resonating with all these stuffs. I know! It's too late to realise that "We get only degrees from colleges, but in order to be employable we need to practise & learn skills at our own" I know.... After 5 & 7 year down the line, when you'll move back through your memories, Atleaset for once, but you must say " Why college?", "Why did we go college?"
