We’re excited to unveil our design for NOT A HOTEL Setouchi, located on the serene Sagi Island in Japan! 🌊🏝️ Set to break ground later this year, NOT A HOTEL's newest resort will feature three villas that weave through the 30,000 m2 site like a ribbon, with panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Building on the longstanding dialogue between Scandinavian and Japanese design values, the remote island retreat incorporates local materials - including Japanese black slate, wood and rammed earth - and a strong connection to nature. “Our design approach for NOT A HOTEL Setouchi wasn’t about imposing our ideas on the site; instead, it involved exploring, observing and understanding the landscape. We envisioned how to best leverage this distinctive and remarkable terrain and fixed upon a design that mirrors the elegance of traditional Japanese architecture. Japan is one of the cultures in the world where commitment to craft and care for quality remains intact. The honesty and simplicity of the structure and careful choice of materials can be said to have greatly influenced the traditional architecture of Japan and the modern architecture of Denmark. Maybe that's why when I go to Japan, I always feel like I'm coming home. NOT A HOTEL Setouchi will be an experiment in what happens when the sensibilities of both countries come together – the Danish desire for simplicity and the care and perfection of Japan." - Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG 📷 Mir + LIT design #Arup 1Moku Landscape Design and Research #BOCS #MAEDACorporation #NOSIGHT #NOTAHOTEL #Japan #Setouchi #travel #BIGArchitecture #BIGLON #BIGNYC #BIGLA

Great architecture starts with a story and finishes with the design - and not the other way around! Great work! 🙌

Combining utopian architecture with the organic principles of site integration guidelines (FLW) is a great opportunity to see problems as challenging solutions. I should work for you guys, but the attempt seems daunting. Again! - too much interference in the communications dialogue is obfuscated. Hererozygosity reigns and little of true value is communicated. Some if us see a logorrhea of too many words. How do you get through to those who can provide relevant solutions in the interview process? You need the best of those who excel in design- rare. Perhaps you are confounded by the challenges if your great successes! Overwhelmed?

Inspiring! The architecture language, especially the black slated roof structure, amazingly justifies the site surroundings. Plus the panorama view. What a great piece of work!
