This time last year, Kimberly, our daughter and I were in Paris visiting family. It’s wonderful to have a good excuse to visit Paris and it’s a joy to see our little one playing with her Parisian cousin (who fortunately speaks Spanish in addition to French, so the two can communicate). Hopefully our girl will learn French, herself. As a real estate development professional, visiting such places is more than a vacation. It’s an immersive, educational experience in placemaking. Paris, like all other beloved European cities, has its social life linked by a constellation of public spaces — plazas, courtyards, ample sidewalks, and parks. Whenever we visit France, we don’t really do don’t too many touristy things (although I do love the Eiffel Tower). I prefer, like Nassim Taleb, to be a flaneur, an idle man-about-town. Is there a better place to do it? In great cities, no one structure is as complex and interesting as the fabric of the built environment itself. The human scale, the balance of Architectural similarity and variation, perfectly placed punctuations of public space throughout, building height and block lengths, the use of urban trees and landscaping — the list goes on. Our oldest cities are veritable encyclopedias of good design. If you aspire to have a hand in shaping our built environment, you owe it to society as much as yourself to travel to our iconic places — as a discipline. But today´s post also represents an opportunity to share one of the most well-received bespoke projects during our in-person presentations here in the US and Canada. The aim to create three unique fountains (art, interactive, and show fountain types) for a Shopping mall in China triggered our creative teams to develop unique concepts related to the sea. References such as the sea tide, marine life, and deep-sea creatures inspired us to create original and memorable fountain experiences for this shopping mall project.   ART FT - playing with the tide effect formed by water injected under pressure SHOW FT – Integrating sea creatures (sculptures) with the pool and making them part of the multimedia show. The image showcases spherical, pod-like dwellings nestled amidst lush greenery and ancient trees. These eco-friendly habitats are characterized by their organic shapes and large, circular windows that provide immersive, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The materials appear to be a combination of natural wood for the interiors, enhancing the warmth and inviting atmosphere, and an insulated, reinforced cob exterior that does not affect the environment, thus minimizing visual impact. The integration of green roofs suggests a commitment to sustainability, helping to regulate the temperature within while also supporting local flora. A serene water feature encircles the pods, promoting a sense of peace and relaxation. The entire setting is designed to foster a connection with nature, offering a secluded retreat that emphasizes well-being and environmental consciousness. This series of CGIs and technical details explore our ideas on developing and improving upon an existing atrium space while giving it a new identity through the use of sustainable and contemporary materials. The prompt - tying the interior spaces with the existing courtyards together through a new ‘garden reception.’ Our reimagining of the space puts the atrium at the centre, connecting the entrance to the main space. The first thing you see when taking the escalator is the stunning timber diagrid roof creating a long and dramatic effect. The detailed roof structure includes solar shading prisms that help flood the space with Natural light. Large pivot doors are located on both sides of the courtyard to help regulate the temperature inside and further connect the spaces within. What do you think of our explorations for this space?

Old buildings can be sustainable, too. Enhancing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact is critical today, and historic structures often benefit the most from these upgrades. By carefully preserving their unique architectural features and cultural context, we make sure these buildings continue to serve as vital, vibrant community landmarks. Our decade-long renovation of the Missoula County Courthouse used LEED guidelines to enhance the structure's historic elements with modern functionality, proving that old walls can embrace new norms. Architectural Triptych: A Journey Through Time and Style At first glance, the photo looks like a straight collage consisting of 3 vertical parts. But it is a real scene taken from a specific perspective, to show different three-dimensional structures on a two-dimensional plane. A captivating harbor scene unfolds, a visual symphony of two buildings where three distinct architectural styled stand united. Clad in classic brick, the structure on the left whispers tales of the past, its timeless facade a testament to enduring heritage. Juxtaposed against this historical anchor, a gleaming glass and steel monolith facade in the center embodies the sleek efficiency of the present day. And on the right, a vision of the future emerges, its organic curves hinting at a world yet to be built. United by this single frame, the three structures of the two buildings engage in a silent dialogue. The old shares its wisdom with the new, the present bridges the gap between tradition and innovation. This visual interplay is the essence of the Media harbor in Düsseldorf, a place where history and progress coexist in perfect harmony.
