Royal Bank of Canada #RBC collaborated with #Ripple on a proof-of-concept (PoC) to explore the use of distributed ledger technology (DLT) for remittance payments, but this was not related to the Project Jasper initiative described in the Jasper report. PROJECT JASPER: A Canadian Experiment with Distributed Ledger Technology for Domestic Interbank Payments Settlement. The Jasper report focuses on a separate collaborative research project between Payments Canada, the Bank of Canada, the R3 consortium, and several Canadian financial institutions, including RBC, to investigate the use of DLT for wholesale interbank payments settlement.

As of recent years, numerous banks and financial institutions have joined the RTP network, facilitated by The Clearing House. This network allows participating banks to offer their customers real-time payment capabilities, enabling instant fund transfers 24/7, 365 days a year. So what do we know about the RTP network so far? 📈 Since 2017 the growth of banks and credit unions joining the RTP network has rapidly increased.  ➕ 2023 alone saw 200+ institutions join, double of which in 2022. 📱 FedNow even pulled through around 320 participants.  ⬆️ The number of RTP payments worldwide is predicted to increase to 27.8% by 2027. 💡 The Swiss National Bank (SNB) and SIX Interbank Clearing Ltd (SIC Ltd) have jointly introduced the new SIC5 platform. This enables financial institutions to process #instant #payments in central bank money. In the future, the SIC-IP service should also be made available to interest providers of payment solutions (payment schemes) for their account-to-account (A2A) payments. Therefore, a rough concept for an #InstantPaymentBridge (IPB) was introduced, which led to a public market consultation. 📑 The #partners of the OpenBankingProject.ch endorse the efforts of SNB and SIX to make the infrastructure accessible to other market participants. OBP has therefore submitted the following statement below. Furthermore, thanks to an instant payment bridge, payment schemes that enable A2A payments directly in #ECommerce or at the #PointOfSale would also be realizable better. With the usage of irrevocable payment promises, instant payments could be also used for such A2A payments, although IP have been considered inadequate due to the 10-second time period so far. The newly established ClearBank Europe N.V. secured a Credit Institution Licence from the European Central Bank under the supervision of De Nederlandsche Bank. Expansion to Europe marks the first step in ClearBank’s international growth plans, with the company now competing on a regional level. “We are thrilled to be open for business in Europe – and this marks the first milestone in our global expansion strategy. We will soon fulfil client demand for Euro clearing, as well as Sterling, with the US Dollar coming next,” said Charles McManus, CEO, ClearBank. Unlike other European providers with legacy systems, ClearBank’s services are accessed via a single API, underpinned by a scalable and flexible, real-time cloud-native platform. The platform was purpose-built from scratch, allowing for more efficient and cost-effective transactions and free of legacy issues associated with traditional banking infrastructure.
