The government of #Albania has launched a tender that will facilitate the construction of 300 MW of #solar photovoltaic (#PV) parks in view of the Balkan country’s plans to become a net exporter of #renewableenergy by 2030. The solicitation commenced on Monday and will be open until May 17 for the submission of technical and financial bids, energy and infrastructure minister Belinda Balluku said at a press conference. The names of winners are due to be announced on July 10. Proposals with capacities ranging between 10 MW and 100 MW will be eligible to take part in the competitive round, with offers being capped at EUR 59.97 (USD 65.28) per MWh. Successful candidates will be awarded 15-year contracts with the government for their plants’ future output. While the state will procure the power generation, it will not take care of providing land rights for the individual projects as it previously did. The tender round is backed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). It backs Albania’s efforts to deploy 1 GW of solar power capacity by the end of the decade. Albania has so far held two solar tenders. https://lnkd.in/dX9paGk5

This week the Georgian government announced that an international study has confirmed the technical and economic feasibility of the Black Sea Submarine Cable (BSSC) Project. A 1,195 km long undersea cable with a capacity of 1 GW will be the longest of its kind worldwide and will supply green energy from Azerbaijan to Europe via Georgia and Romania by 2030. Earlier this year Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary signed a memorandum to create a joint venture as part of the project implementation. Azerbaijan’s strategy to become a regional green energy hub is also critical for Central Asia’s ambitions to expand renewable energy and green hydrogen exports to Europe. Following this year’s high-level agreement between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan on connecting the countries' energy systems, last month the Kazakh Ministry of Energy developed a draft tripartite Strategic Partnership agreement on green energy exports to Europe, including through BSSC. The Role of Africa's Power Pools and Regional Integration: Africa's power pools play a crucial role in driving regional interconnection and facilitating cross-border energy trade, essential for improving electricity access, enhancing grid reliability, and integrating renewable energy across the continent. Key Players: 1. Southern African Power Pool (SAPP): Established in 1995 with 12 member countries, including South Africa. Major projects like the ZIZABONA transmission line enhance energy sharing and stabilize grids across the region. 2. Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP): Founded in 2005, connecting 11 countries. The Ethiopia-Kenya Interconnection stands out by exporting Ethiopia’s hydropower surplus to its neighbors. 3. West African Power Pool (WAPP): Created in 1999, involving 14 countries such as Nigeria and Ghana. Initiatives like the OMVG Interconnection address electricity deficits and promote energy trade. 4.Central African Power Pool (CAPP): Formed in 2003 with 11 members. Projects like the Grand Inga aim to unlock the region’s hydropower potential for broader export. 5.North African Interconnections: Countries like Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco are focusing on cross-border electricity trade, with possible connections to Europe through Morocco's Electricity Market. 6.North-South Corridor: A future project aiming to connect North and Southern Africa, enabling large-scale energy trade. Benefits of Regional Integration: 1. Energy Security while improved electricity distribution reduces shortages. 2.Cost Efficiency when cross-border exchanges lower overall electricity costs. 3.Renewable Integration will leverage Africa’s solar, wind, and hydropower potential. Conclusion: Africa’s power pools are vital for sustainable energy development, though challenges such as infrastructure and regulatory gaps persist. I would love to hear your insights and thoughts on the future of Africa’s energy connectivity. Let us discuss! #AfricaEnergy #PowerPools #EnergyTrade #EnergyInfrastructure

A joint venture among four transmission system operators—Transelectrica (Romania), Azerenerji (Azerbaijan), Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE), and MVM (Hungary)—is set to develop the Black Sea Energy subsea cable project, costing €3.5 billion. This initiative aims to deliver renewable electricity from the South Caucasus to Europe, enhancing energy security amid geopolitical tensions. The 1,195 km subsea cable will have a capacity of 1 GW, enough to power approximately 1 million homes. Supported by the European Commission, the project will connect these nations and may include an optical cable to improve data flow. The feasibility study, presented at COP29, confirms the project’s viability. The cable is designed to avoid national waters of Türkiye and Bulgaria. This strategic collaboration aims to diversify energy sources, reduce costs, and position the Black Sea as a renewable energy hub, with significant investments in wind and solar energy in the participating countries.
