To minimize water usage, we use sprinkler irrigation on our farm. While drip irrigation is often considered more water-efficient, it has the drawback of localized water supply to the plants, which can deprive the surrounding soil of moisture and negatively impact the microbial life support system. This can result in nutrient-poor areas within the agricultural land. In contrast, sprinkler irrigation promotes soil health by evenly distributing water. Additionally, it helps prevent soil compaction, which can occur after multiple cycles of drip irrigation. Soil compaction reduces aeration and limits the sustenance of beneficial bacteria by restricting oxygen supply.

Groundwater resources are even more challenging to quantify than streamflow due to the absence of observed data, long enough to capture slow changes in the system — very interesting article on trends in groundwater levels. Not sure about the inter-basin water transfers, as often they are just shifting the water scarcity problem to another area (are Guadiana groundwater levels rising because of the water from the Tagus river basin?). Also, the new edition of the State of the Global Water Resources will include improved assessments of the groundwater levels in aquifers in 2023, produced by IGRAC. #groundwater #waterconservation #watermanagement #waterscarcity

Aqualinc: The problem with swallow ground water Shallow groundwater systems are becoming a significant hazard in our built environments, with water tables often alarmingly shallow and rising. This not only increases construction costs but also elevates the risk of liquefaction and flood damage. Yet, there's a critical lack of data on the issue. In August, Aqualinc Research Limited announced a new research programme with funding from BRANZ, the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, the Building Innovation Partnership at the University of Canterbury, and the Marlborough District Council, to build a value proposition for a national shallow groundwater database and come up with solutions "A huge thank you to Lyell and Val McMillan for enabling us to establish a test site in Southbridge, Canterbury. It's well established that the subsurface disposal of produced water can be linked to induced seismicity, but what about surface impacts? A recent paper published by Nature Magazine (Scientific Reports) evaluated the links between leaky injection wells and surface deformation. https://lnkd.in/gzWWtRfx "Analysis of individual interferograms or InSAR time series may provide insights into shallow subsurface heterogeneity or anomalous injection conditions at operating wells more rapidly than scheduled field inspections." Injection wells are clearly required to dispose of the current volumes of produced water being generated in the #Permian; however, beneficial reuse gives us another, more sustainable, outlet for these resources. The Phoenix metropolitan area hides a valuable source of water underground – a large and ancient aquifer. As is true for many arid areas around the world, this groundwater provides tremendous benefits, including stability in times when surface water supplies are reduced. While generally well managed under Arizona’s 1980 Groundwater Management Act, decades on, the aquifer is facing new challenges, including a mismatch between where water is withdrawn and where it is recharged.
