Today Giving Gap launched their 2024 "State of Black Nonprofits Report", chocked full of some really important data. Some of the findings we already knew: "Despite their unwavering commitment to addressing our country's greatest social challenges, Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth." But the report also speaks to the resilience, brilliance, and perseverance of Black-led nonprofits. Thanks, Giving Gap and Heather Infantry, for including myself and Hued Songs. Here are two ways brands can show solidarity with the Black community: 1. External partnerships: Work with companies, organizations and institutions such as HBCUs that champion diversity and have broad representation to diversify your talent pool and content. Collaborate with third-party DEI vendors to conduct unconscious bias training and incorporate Black creators into your overall strategy. 2. Compensation: Compensate your partners, especially when working with Black content creators. If your company is limited in resources, think outside of the box and focus on adding value in another way. For example, you could donate to a nonprofit organization on their behalf or co-market their content across all social media platforms throughout the year. Learn more in the full article:

We must acknowledge a simple truth: Those who are closest to a community are the ones best equipped with solutions to a community’s challenges. The truly disruptive question to our field is: “What does philanthropy have to learn from the individuals we have never truly listened to?” Instead of prescribing grant metrics in a top-down way, we ask grantees how they would define success and design metrics together. Accountability is amplified when the metric is identified by the person or organization who is responsible for the outcome.
