Today is day of BEER Imagine it's April 23, 1516 and you're in Bavaria, where one of the coolest beer parties of all time is taking place. Why? Because Duke Wilhelm IV has just decided to change the world of beer forever - with a new law to bring order to the brewing kettle. 🎉 The Purity Law is born! 🎉 The whole thing went like this: Wilhelm and his crew were fed up with this shoddy beer brewed with everything from weird stuff like juniper berries to even weirder ingredients like crabs (okay, maybe not crabs, but you get what I mean). They thought: "Let's go back to basics. Beer should really just be made from water, hops and barley!" And voilà, the Purity Law was born. 🍺 Beer that promises purity! 🍺 This little piece of parchment was not just any old document. No, it was the start of something big. It assured every beer lover in Germany (and later worldwide) that their beer was pure and good - no unexpected ingredients, just pure, honest beer. 🎊 A reason to celebrate - every year anew! 🎊 And so it is that today, over 500 years later, we are still celebrating this ingenious idea. On German Beer Day, we toast the simplicity and purity of our favorite drink. Breweries open their doors and there are festivals everywhere to honor this glorious law. Because honestly, who needs more than water, hops and barley to have a good time? 🥳 So, raise your glass (or measure)! 🥳 Let's raise our glasses to Wilhelm, who probably had no idea that his law would have such a lasting impact on beer culture. Cheers, to pure beer and good friends! #GermanBeerDay #PurityLaw #Cheers 🍻 Picture has been created by AI

I had a discouraging experience this past weekend: This past Saturday, I'd arranged with a brewery down in San Diego to do an event for my book, Beer Hiking Southern California. This event had been over a month in the making. It was a brewery that was featured in the book, I had a conversation partner who was joining me, my sister came down from the Bay Area to attend, I got all dressed up for it, ordered lots of books to sell myself, and...no one showed up. I sat there with my sister and a couple friends in the brewery's beer garden with the books all set up and watched the event time come...and go. There were three other people in the beer garden and none of them were there for the event. The music over the speakers never stopped. There was no announcement. No introduction. We didn't even end up doing the conversation — we'd be talking for virtually no audience. I was so crestfallen, but also still appreciative to have my sister and the couple friends who did come out. We all got some beers and tacos, my sister took some pictures of me looking all dolled up, and I ended up selling a couple copies to people just getting a beer at the brewery, but it definitely hadn't been what I'd hoped for. I write all of this for two reasons: 1. Because while we all love sharing the success stories and good times on here (and other social media platforms), I think it's valuable to also share the discouraging moments and setbacks. To understand that that's life and not all events go to plan. 2. This was a valuable learning lesson in recognizing that despite my best efforts, sometimes things still flop. Does that make me a failure? Absolutely not. It doesn't even make the book a failure. One flop does not have to define anything. It's simply one data point. I don't know, maybe I should have been more assertive, asked for the music to be turned down, still done the talk to an empty/uninterested room, etc. But at the end of the day, I did get some really great promotional pictures like the one below! P.S. Please don't let my event this upcoming weekend also flop — I'm running a guided hike with Earth Discovery Institute this Sunday morning with celebratory beers and book signings at Chula Vista Brewery of Eastlake afterwards, so if you're going to be in San Diego PLEASE SIGN UP AND COME and if you're not, share it with your network just in case. 😂 🙏 (but really...) https://lnkd.in/ge5vVAaa

Planning a 3 week trip with my wife and two kiddos to Munich to drink über fresh Lager beer this Spring. Going to hit the famous breweries of Munich, head to Bamberg and imbibe world-class Rauchbier, pop over to Bad Köstritz for their eponymous and inimitable Schwarzbier, and maybe, if I'm lucky, my kids will let me pop over to Plzen to drown myself in Pilsner. I've been writing and speaking professionally about German and Czech beer, specifically beer from Munich and Plzen, for coming up on two decades and I am embarrassed to say I've never been to Munich to drink beer, Oktoberfest or otherwise, so I'm finally heading there to try these bucket list beers fresh from the tap at the facilities that make them. My wife, Cindy, is also a Certified Cicerone® so she's super game for the trip. My kids? We'll they're budding beer geeks already, so they're on board as well just assuming there will be plenty of bike rides, park visits and nap time (all of which sound great to me). Here's my question: How can I get someone to fund this beer voyage? Sounds like a joke (get paid to drink beer), but I have more experience writing and speaking about beer than most people have experience even drinking it (kinda makes ya think how much beer I've had to drink to get there.) So there must be someone interested in working with me, right? I'm looking forward to writing and filming my experience, working while I'm there, but find myself inept when it comes to social media (Instagram, Youtube and I'm old enough to think that TikTok is all just dance videos so don't even start on that). But, I have to imagine that I can find some company or entity that would find my experience over there useful. Are there any avenues that anyone would recommend to find a way to fund this trip? Maybe this is naive, but I'll be honest, in my professional career I've found no other way to make money than getting paid to drink beer. And this is LinkedIn, so you all know me professionally and know that's true. So, if past is prologue, the beer community will continue to help me engage further in my only professional ability - drinking beer. Prost!

Great read from the viewpoint of media (writers, podcasters) on the beer industry. The answers to questions about surprising ways the industry has developed and what stories we should be talking more about are insightful, especially the comment about fresh beers. Cheers, The Crafty Pint!
It might not be as much fun as drinking a delicious beer, but beer media plays an important role in the ever-evolving beer world (we have to say that, right?). May's Melbourne Royal® Australian International Beer Awards will mark ten years of The Crafty Pint-sponsored Best Media trophy. So, before submissions for the 2024 awards close on Friday, current champ Mick Wust invited past winners to share their favourite stories, reflections on the industry, and the stories they'd love to read.
