My name is Eddie Hart, yoga Winger. Currently I'm working for Bank of New York, where my corporate title is Senior Vice President. Responsible for the Trustee and Depository business which I support in my role as a Global Business Compliance Officer. So the financial industry is the bedrock of our society and our existence as as human beings, and it has been for centuries now. You know, when you think about everything that we do as human beings, it's so tied into what happens in the financial industry. So even if your doctor, your nurse. Everything you do, you're linked to the financial industry. You need a bank, you you've got a pension and, and the financial industry plays a significant role in that. So being part of the financial industry is quite pivotal because you're impacting a lot of people in different ways. And so, yeah, it, it made sense for me to be part of the this industry purely from that broad perspective. I joined a Bank of New York in October 2020, right in the Midwest of COVID. And what drove me to join the bank is at the time one of the values which was being articulated by the bank spoke about how the bank was making differences, difference, positive difference in people's financial eyes. And that aspect was well aligned or still remains well aligned with my own personal objective of wanting to make positive differences. In people's lives. And if I can do that while he's performing my day job where I'm being paid, that made lots of sense. So I think the first thing that caught my attention even before I joined was 111 word change, right? The bank is very dynamic and is always changing. Getting my face professional in the UK was very challenging and the main barrier to entry that I found was the requirement of employers for me to have UK experience, despite me being a qualified accountant using a UK institution and having lots of experience. So that that was the biggest challenge that that I faced and I had to go below the level that. I, I, I was at you order for me to actually get into the workspace here. Two thoughts from my perspective when it comes to to black people and and and the inclusion the first thought is. A statement which which which I read, which talks about, you know, everyone is a genius, but if you judge if a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it's stupid, right? So there's that statement. And then the second statement is something which is attributable to Abraham Lincoln where he said that I don't like that man much. I should take time to understand him, so when I combine those two statements, it speaks to something that. Um, when we are thinking about inclusion, we need to think about because it speaks to people needing to ask themselves to say what is it about a black person that makes me uncomfortable for them to be included? The way I look at my career at this stage is not so much about certain targets of what I want to do in the next 5 years. I would rather much focus on delivery. What is it that and actually bring to the table? I've got a broad variety of experience and if I do my job to the best of my ability and expand and demonstrate what what more that I can do, my belief is that there will be a reward that will come out of there. So, so, so that's, that's how I, I, I, I, I look at it at this stage in my career, do the absolute best, show what I'm capable of, and then my career will naturally progressed. The next natural level. Yes, definitely. I would recommend BL on as an employer of choice. Why do I say that? Earlier I talked about the pace of change. It's a dynamic institution is always looking to learn. Hey, this is talking about you got 5 principles that we are focusing on at the moment, one of which is, you know, thriving together and being client obsessed. And the one is is no staying curious. So if you are someone who wants to develop yourself, someone who wants to be an environment where there are always opportunities for you to express yourself, develop yourself, this is a place to be, but also there are very. Great people have had the opportunity of working with very excellent people are at a human level, very good human beings but also very smart individuals as well. So I would definitely recommend for someone to to join the bank. I think definitely it will be the people, right? I've found being a global, global institution, you expect a different array of characters suppose, but I find that like I said earlier on, very great human beings and in my professional career. Is, is being rare that I found people who are extremely smart and intelligent. And I've had the privilege of working with probably one or two people that I would deem to be extremely intelligent. And that's exciting for me. And it's interesting because that's the kind of thing that actually drives me. So I think that that would be one thing that I would actually point out.

#BlackMenLead: Sekou Kaalund calls himself an “accidental banker.” At age five, the former head of Chase Consumer Bank for the Northeast Division told his parents he planned to run for U.S. Senate so he could create laws to help communities in need.
“From a young age, my whole anchoring was on how can I be of service and drive impact,” says Kaalund, head of branch and small business banking at U.S. Bank.
Banking wasn’t even on Kaalund’s radar until he won an award sponsored by the Executive Leadership Council while attending Duke University that offered the opportunity to learn from Black leaders at top companies across the U.S.
“I realized that I could have a greater impact by influencing capital flows and leading people,” Kaalund says, which caused him to pivot his career aspirations.
In a career that’s taken him from the New York Federal Reserve to fifteen years at JPMorgan Chase, Kaalund has helped to narrow the racial wealth gap by bringing more people from underserved communities – including Black Americans — into the financial system and helping them to achieve greater economic success.

The United States Black Chamber, Inc. has released the USBC Black Investment Report, which sheds light on the #investment landscape for Black households + businesses.
The report conveys that stock ownership are one of the primary drivers of the nation’s wealth gap — with 66% of white families owning stocks vs. 39% of Black families.
It’s notable to emphasize the role that #fintech has played in the #democratization of capital access for Black households, with companies like Robinhood making it simpler to invest. In fact, the report states that nearly 50% of Black investors are between the ages of 18-34, relative to only 21% of white investors being in that age category. 👏🏽👏🏽
While the finance sector continues to be a ‘warm introduction’ industry, fueled by tightly knit social capital predominantly dominated by white men — fintech #innovation has done well to flatten the learning curve for traditionally un-/underbanked individuals. Fintech has made many traditional means of accessing capital completely irrelevant — and that’s the energy we need!
As a practitioner in the financial services industry, my peers and I have a RESPONSIBILITY to be more imaginative about meeting the demands of our communities. Communities deserve tailored solutions that flatten the learning curve. Simply regurgitating the rules of an antiquated system (which is exclusive by design) won’t cut it.
Huge kudos to fintech innovators who are building solutions that mirror the everyday behaviors of the community. It’s working.
Thank you, Marie Clark, for sharing this report with me.

Hannah Lisa Smith, Managing Director at State Street Global Markets and Reboot ambassador, spoke to Financial News about her experience of working in the asset management sector as a Black woman.
From facing job rejection after job rejection while her peers (many of them white males) secured them quickly, to contending with a dearth of Black role models in the workplace, Hannah delves into the challenges she has faced building her career to what it is today – highlighting the urgent need for greater diversity and inclusion in financial services, and a consistent approach to materialising it.
Not only is driving DEI the right thing to do, but it’s a good for business too. Indeed, recent research conducted by Reboot among investment industry professionals showed that four in ten institutional investors would turn down working with a fund manager due to lack of ethnic diversity – a figure we hope to see increase exponentially.
