In Part 2 of Reframing the Arts Sector, guests Calida Jones and Douglas R Clayton point out that the Arts are not just commodities and oftentimes are overlooked as vital cultural resources that enhance and enrich communities. Another way to look at how many arts organizations are not prioritized either through community engagement or philanthropic resources is subjective and misplaced notions of what is and who defines something as of 'quality'. The exploration and community-centered arts organizations by design are to be inclusive and accessible, so who's standards say when that "quality" has been achieved? Tune in to this conclusion to our conversation on how to innovate and reframe the arts sector toward achieving and prioritizing equitable, accessible, and inclusive models and approaches to have the broader reach and social impact many in the Arts sector strive to attain. Funders also should rethink how they prioritize the Arts in their grantmaking approaches to also be equitable in other areas of funding that align with arts education, arts as an economic driver, and arts as a vehicle for healing and wellness. Next month I am honored to be presenting to museum directors from the Oklahoma Museums Association. I have at least one other large state museums association also interested, so there seems to be a common thread here. I absolutely *LOVE* working with the association world! Reason being, I often have to speak in generalities as most in a general audience will have a wide range of interests related to risk, but when you speak to a specific industry or profession with very niche specific risks, it just allows for much greater focus and strategies to be offered. If you represent #associationmanagement for a professional #nonprofitorganization I'd love to have a conversation with you as there are many points of potential customization, not only for the obvious need, but for potential ongoing customization and even association branding. As the Grand Re-Opening of my synagogue, the ISAAC AGREE DOWNTOWN SYNAGOGUE, approaches, I want to share part of why we are so #successful in attracting young congregants and meeting #fundraising goals that might seem insane for a 3.5 person staff. 1. There are no dues, but we are building a strong culture of #RecurringGiving 2. Our High Holiday services don’t require tickets, are #free, and even RSVP in advance is functionally optional. (But please RSVP if you’re coming!) 3. Our staff is amazing, but the secret to our fundraising muscle is the fact that there are #funders who want Detroit to succeed and want the #JewishCommunity in this city to thrive. 4. Young people are moving to the city and having families here. Are there problems in #Detroit? Of course. But it’s a great city with a thriving Black middle class, great food, world-class arts, general convenience, nice amenities, and a much lower crime rate than you think. 5. Our rabbi, Ariana Silverman, leads with kindness, joy, a welcoming spirit, and an unshakable commitment to #SocialJustice. #nonprofit #SuccessStory

Building Authentic Indigenous Connections: A Call to Action for Educational Leaders and Non-Profit Board Members As leaders in education and non-profit organizations, we often acknowledge the importance of honouring Indigenous lands and cultures through land acknowledgment statements. These statements are crucial, but they are only the first step on a meaningful journey of understanding, respect, and allyship. I've had the privilege of joining hands with HAWI, led by the incredible Stacy Hill and Chandra Maracle from the Six Nations territory near Brantford (you can discover their transformative work here: https://lnkd.in/gE4_funQ these courses have opened my eyes to the rich tapestry of Indigenous knowledge, history, and culture. From participating in interactive, experiential history exercises to attending PowWows, these experiences have not only deepened my understanding but have also taught me how to demonstrate true allyship. Many non-Indigenous individuals are unsure of how to take the next step beyond land acknowledgments. This is where courses and retreats like those offered by HAWI come in. They provide a safe and supportive space to learn, grow, and build bridges of trust between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. By taking these steps, we align our organizations with our mission, strengthen our land acknowledgments, and send a powerful message to our donors, staff, and the public that we are committed to creating meaningful change. Moreover, our actions as educational leaders and non-profit board members can inspire others to follow suit. Together, we can foster a culture of respect, understanding, and allyship that transcends boundaries. I encourage all my fellow leaders to explore the incredible opportunities that HAWI and similar organizations offer. Let’s move beyond words and into action, working hand in hand with Indigenous communities to create a brighter, more inclusive future for all. Since the 2023 Giving Report underscored the nearly 15% decline in giving, we know that on that list, arts and cultural organizations are the least funded and the pandemic has been particularly challenging for performance organizations and museums where many beloved organizations have had to shutter their doors. At Because We've Been In Your Shoes, Tom Bull (He/Him/His) and I were so excited to have Calida Jones and Douglas R Clayton leading national arts consultants join us in a deep discussion about what is needed to prioritize arts funding, innovate the sector, and further equity and inclusion for more diversity in the arts nonprofits. They recently co-founded Creative Evolutions, an arts consulting practice focused on infusing more innovation, new models, and inclusive and equitable approaches to reframing the arts sector to be more diverse, strategic, and sustainable. And, through their collaboration, they recently received first place at the Yale Innovation Summit. Mission. What do you think when you hear that word? This is one of the words Calida and Doug push back on using because there can be a lot of negative energy around what a mission is and can create stress for nonprofit staff. They don't want nonprofit staff to feel like they have to fall on the sword for their organization's mission! They want to encourage healthy boundaries in working, consulting, and collaborating with nonprofits because gone are the days of a nonprofit leader wearing multiple hats and fulfilling multiple roles into one person's responsibility all for the sake of the mission. Calida and Doug, with their new collaboration Creative Evolutions, are not afraid to do things differently. They focus on innovation and human-centered work and analyze different angles to see what is best for their clients and the art sector as a whole.
